I'd rather we invade Cuba and make that our 11th province then Alaska. Cuba actually has something that most of Canada doesn't: tropical weather. Plus who wouldn't mind having sugarcane as Canada's top five agricultural exports?

Canada seems nice and better with Alaska

That entire map would look nice if it where red.

Wouldn't that be the North American Union?

This conversation is really interesting.

From what I've read, we didn't want Turks & Caicos in the 90s for fear of getting swamped with refugees from the Caribbean. Now they've got a huge tourist boom and don't need us any more. It's too bad, it would give us a place to train our summer athletes for the Olympics. Then they could come in 10th instead of 30th. :)

Alaska would have been great 100 years ago, before the US drained it of gold and oil. Sure there is still some up there, but not like there used to be. The picture of Canada with Alaska included is pretty nice, but it'll never happen. That picture reminded me of the novel Warday, when Canada bought it from an impoverished USA after WW3 (along with a whole bunch of other stuff).

How many of us Canadians would be freaking out if it were Americans talking about expanding their borders by encouraging Alberta to join them?

Somehow I doubt we would view that suggestion with such light-hearted posts as we talk about welcoming a state that probably has no intention of ever joining Canada.

Bermuda.... the UK would love to unload it.

You all have plenty of land, and barely any people to cover such a huge area.

Nope, I was just sleep deprived.

And thanks for not even entertaining my idea/giving your own. All you resorted to what political soapboxing. I guess I shouldn't have held my hopes so high.. :P

Anyway, if anyone is even remotely willing to discuss this topic without resorting to political bias or personal jabs, I say we do so.

Would it not be possible to let Alaska in as a sort of "Nation within a United Nation" concept? We could pretty much let them be autonomous, but the only things they'd have to do is join Confederation, adopt the Canadian dollar, and pay taxes like everyone else.

Feel free to add on the incentives we could offer Alaska for joining Confederation.

I haven't entertained your idea, but your idea is entertaining.

That would be one city of Hamilton I think I could stand to live in. I'd also love to have the Turks and the Caicos since they've tried a half dozen time to join. forget Alaska, bring on the tropics.

Actually it was Canada that tried unsuccessfully in 1917 under Borden, 1974 under Trudeau, 1986 under Mulroney, and in 2004 conservative MP Peter Goldring drafted a motion for them to join but the CPC rejected the motion. Also in 2004 NS invited them to join.

Its still an option. Last I heard the they rejected the notion in 86 because our dollar was weak and were amiable in 74 but we rejected them.

there was a time or two in the 60's with the West Indies Federation too. Still I'd love to be able to go a Caribbean Canadian territory.

I dont' think Canada every actually tried. They merely suggested it.

Well in 1917 we asked the british empire to annex them (IE be given) but Lolyd said no. 74 was a failed attempt. The rest were just musings.

Kinda interesting but considering the circumstances about how many provinces joined us its not implausible.
