So long, Canada, By Edward McClelland

If NATO is a relic, then why did so many countries want to join? Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria. Yes, they are now all sleeping better... more to come..
Probably because they are still afraid of their old nemesis, the Russians, but that's not our problem. The Russians are no threat to us or to the EU, whose purchase of oil is all that keeps the Russian economy afloat. If they are a threat to a handful of small former Soviet client states not in the EU, let the Europeans handle it.

Prior to all the strict new border policies Canadians complained that we treated you like part of the US, now your complaining that we don't. Very puzzling behavior.

Well, Eddie baby, it took you long enough to come to that realisation, but better late than never.

NORAD still works and is the basis for airspace/space defence.
Work's how? It's sole purpose was to guard against Soviet bombers and missles coming over the pole, and the Soviets aren't there anymore. What's left of their missle subs are rotting at port and their bomber fleet is not in much better shape. They are no threat. NORAD is an obsolete multi billion dollar waste of money. It's long past time to dissolve it and use it's funding for other needs.

Well... that is your weak opinion, not based on fact. It would be stupid to believe that outer space will not be militarized.
Here is a recent, May 4 report on Russian bomber intercepts near Canadian airspace:
http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2008 ... 96-cp.htmlAn excerpt:
$1:
....."The Russians are just telling all the Arctic nations, 'We're back,' " says Rob Huebert of the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary.
Since Russian president Vladimir Putin announced last August that Russia would resume its long-range air patrols, about two Tu-95 bombers a month have been flying into the buffer zone just outside Canadian and U.S. airspace in the Arctic.
"It's a section of airspace emanating from both of our countries," says USAF Col. John Zentner, chief of NORAD current operations. "It's a section of airspace that we've identified that allows us to transition from offshore flights to those approaching our mainland."
Documents show that Canadian CF-18 Hornets have flown five such Bear intercept missions - one in 2006 and two each in September and November last year.
American jets have flown another 12 such missions in the Arctic...
...."It indicates quite clearly (Russia's) renewed interest and enforcement capability in the Arctic. It's clearly a restatement for Putin to say the Russian armed forces are back in town."
Nojo and his colleagues are happy to escort them around.
"You sit on the wing and you're seen to support Canadian sovereignty."

What facts contradict my opinion? That a couple of bombers that were relics 20 years ago approached Canada? I think the Canadians can handle intercepts of a few stray planes without our help. As for your argument NORAD is needed because someone is going to militarize space, you should really do a bit more research before you type. The USSR militarized space back in the 80s, and with all the spy satellites (that have nothing to do with NORAD) that we have in orbit you couldn't put a BB gun up there with out alarm bells going off. Face it, NORAD is not needed. It's mission died with the USSR and we now have much more efficient and cost effective ways of detecting and defending against threats.
I am strongly against the new border restritions on Canada. I fully trust Canada is able to guard its borders. The US is really wasting precious dollars on this.

Doesn't every country have the right to secure their border without the consent of neighboring nations, regardless of their opinion on the matter. I'm not saying I agree with all the tightening as I don't see Canada as a security threat but its not really their decision to make. I will say that it has definitely affected business in both Windsor and Detroit. A lot of teens go to Windsor to drink at 19 and many 21 and older Canadians come to Detroit for the bars, sports and clubs.
The U.S. has done a bang up job of securing the southern border now haven't they? Last I heard about 10,000 illegal immigrants come through each day. So much so that congress voted on building a wall between the two countries, but that was just a side show, because the funding for it was never to be made available - ever. But us Canucks - now thats a whole nother story, we might take their jobs I guess, or instill some bad habits or something - the border issue is a joke.

The Mexican-American border is a more complex issue than the Canadian-American border mostly because of the humanitarian issue present only in the Mexican-American border.

There not worried that were not able to guard our borders, the US is worried about the people we cant seem to keep track of once we let them in our country.
We do after all have a serious enopugh problem with tracking immigrants and refugees who seem to disappear once here and we cant find them.
So if your one of these people and want to cross into the US via Canada well your going to have to go to a federal office and enter your name in the system to get proof of citizenship, that's when the alarms go off for CDN federal officials.
