What is a "good Canadian"?

So the Public Security minister gives a speech at the Hudson Institute to a room that seemed to be half American think tank types and half Canadians. It was mostly the same old about how Canada is spending billions on border security and giving guards guns and yet y'all want us to carry passports and build fences... It actually struck me as a soft sell; he could have hammered harder on the huge economic interests involved on the US side.

But what really struck me was the way he was introduced. Chris Sands made a comment that revealed a bit of the lingering inside-the-beltway attitudes toward Canada, Iraq war disasters notwithstanding:

"I was struck back in 2003 after doing a briefing with some people in the Administration. It had been a rough year. We were getting ready to go to Iraq. Canada-US relations were somewhat strained by that. At the end of the briefing -- which had been a little bit grim -- about how Canada and the US could work together better in this war on terror that we were facing, the person I was was briefing paused and said to me, 'Chris, where are all the good Canadians?' When he said that it broke a little bit of my heart, because I'm an American but I love the Canadians. I think what he meant by that was 'Where are the Canadians of World War I and World War II, that people understood to be... even when Europeans didn't, those allies we had come to count on.' Well, I have good news. Our speaker today is one of the good Canadians..."

Ahh, I see: Good Canadians are those like Stockwell Day - the ones who meet with the approval of Bush and company. :roll:

What a putz. Being an Ally does not mean getting involved everytime and in anything they choose to. Chretien made the right decision regarding Iraq and now even the Americans can see that(except the few remaining putz's).

You can count on Canadians when it's a just cause. We're not gonna just jump on the bandwagon... :roll:

All the good Canadians are in Afghanistan. So don't say we aren't doing anything in the war on terror.

Did I say that? No. I said that Canada will be there for a just cause.

Ex:

WWII(WWI was about European ambitions)
Korean War
1st Gulf War
Bosnia
Kosovo
Afghanistan

Would you sleep better at night if Saddam Hussein was still alive, in power, and feeding innocents into plastic shredders?

Would we all be better off to have three rogue nations pursuing WMD, instead of two?

Scrappy @ Sun Feb 11, 2007 6:54 pm

Yes he would, but then again he's chained to a tree so he's not the person I'd ask an intelligent question. Opps bull dozer at three oclock, run child runnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn.

A good Canadian is

1. Someone who likes his pancakes and maple syrup;

2. Every Sunday goes to the local little league hockey game;

3. and... (next poster)

Tricks @ Sun Feb 11, 2007 6:59 pm

Wouldn't matter to me. Do you sleep well at night knowing there are many more just like him still alive and in power?

TheFoundersIntent @ Wed Feb 14, 2007 1:41 pm

A good Canadian is one that talks about how he/she isn't American, and thinks about how he/she isn't American all day.
