Canada Kicks Ass
What is really a Canadian, American or Mexican?

It is happening... lines are getting very blurry....

Of course we have many Canadians posing as Americans. Half of Canadians are probably really Americans. And ten percent of all Mexicans are in the U.S.

Can't you see it? We really are all Norte Americanos...

Tens of thousands of Lebanese are "Canadian".... and now lots of Canadians.... well... aren't:

Passport applicants find they're not Canadian

and...

Mennonites may lose Canadian citizenship over 1920s glitch

Maybe if I buy a box of Cracker Jacks I can get a "Canada" ring!

It's ok,... some people feel that if you sneak into the U.S. you should be an American without really trying.

I think nationality should be determined by where your mother was born. Period.

Some people think, they didn't cross the border, the border crossed them.

Sorry, I think you have it backwards. Why would anybody in this world pose as Americans? Good one.

Tritium - I bet that the pic of "inner city poverty, Los Angeles, CA " are not Americans... probably Mexicans who are here because they actually have a better slum life in LA than in homeland Mexico.

And you will never convince me that Mexicans are normal people. I have been there and don't want to go back. The only hope for Mexicans is for them to become American or Canadian. Of course, they want to come here and waive their Mexican flag... not sure what they are so proud of.

And yes, a good estimate is that ten percent of the entire Mexican population is now in the U.S.

It would be interesting to figure out what percent of Canadians are in the U.S..

Probably less well known is that many Western Canadians got there by way of U.S.A.. Let's just call it cross-pollination.

My point is that the whole concept of nationality is getting fuzzy in the North American States. You can deny it, and your grandkids won't really care. I think folks will simply demand the right to settle where they want.

The thing about Lebanese Canadians is just bizarre.

This all means something, I can't quite really say what.

If we sent all the Canadians home (which I really would not want to do), the Canadian population would increase significantly. No?

Tman1 @ Wed Jan 24, 2007 7:59 pm

Probably, but that is hardly 'posing' as Americans.

Ok... "posing" not the best choice of words... should be "living as Americans"... maybe..

My point is ... the increasing fuzziness of nationality around here.

My mothers side of the family(couple generations previous) were all fom Pennsylvania and Immigrated to Alberta from 1900-1920ish. So I know what you're saying. You are correct, within a Century or two it will be very difficult to tell the differences between Canada, the US, and Mexico(perhaps further south even). What does it mean or how will it work out is for the future to decide, but wouldn't be surprised if it eventually forms a new Nation.

Re: Lebanese, it wasn't just Canadians, but much of Europe and even the US. Obviously the Lebanese have strong ties to their former Homeland, stronger than most other Immigrant groups it would appear. The Lebanese have lots to be proud of, for it was not long ago that Lebanon was a great place to live.

That's not totally unique as Immigrant Canadians often return to their former Homelands for various reasons, the CBC recently reported on a Kenyan Immigrant to Canada who returned to Kenya and had started a business there. Other Immigrant Canadians have also returned to former Homelands to run for Political Office, notably former Soviet Republics. IMO, this kind of thing is for the better of all, spreading the Ideals of what makes a First World Nation out to those struggling to find their way.
