Give them attitude and this is what happens. Idiot had it comming.
I do think that the officer originally was being a dick...but what border officers aren't.
"What stores are you going to" is kind of a dumb question. I don't know how I would have reacted either and I would feel a little pissed as well. I hate when I cross for the intent of going to theme parks and they don't understand why and they ask me a series of questions that I don't know answers to.
The guy shouldn't have pushed it this far though.
Another thing...I have a feeling that this is staged.
The U.S. border guard was being a real dick. They always ask some bone-headed questions. This is not the fault of the Canadian. The Americans hae become so paranoid and scared since 9/11, that as Canadians, it's become harder for us to visit their country.
I mean, we're supposed to be 'friends' and yet we're routinely treated like shit by the border guards. I've gone to Buffalo and Detroit for shopping routinely, and am always lambasted and 'interrogated' by the moron American border guards. They have scanners, they have dogs sniffing for drugs, they have tactical squads periodically roaming the border checkpoints. THEIR HARASSING THE WRONG PEOPLE!
After listening to the whole thing, I totally, 100% sympathize with the Canadian couple who were victims of power abuse by total a**holes for border guards. That whole situation is pure bulls**t. I don't know all the stores I'll visit when I go there, I'm not sure about the addresses, I have an idea the location of the mall and how I got there last time.
For the Love of God America: SMARTEN THE F**K UP AND STOP BEING SO BLOODY PARANOID!!
It's no wonder the rest of the world loathes you, and why it's so hard sometimes for Canada to be your 'friend'.
-J.
Funny enough the only border guards who have treated me shitty were Canadian one when I have returned from the US! This idiot from the GTA brought all this on himself for being a smartass to the guard. Regardless of what you think, the US doesn't have to give any reason to deny you entry. Neither do Canadian guards with US citizens visiting Canada.
I thought the tape was hilarious!
I don't know, the first gaurd seemed like a total dickhead.Lots of people go shopping at a mall without a specific store in mind. One answer the guard doesn't like an he elevates the situation to critical mass.He asks for their keys and acts like he is performing a felony stop. The only thing this guy is guilty of is not knowing how many assholes work at the border. He claims he has crossed the border before, but he sounds like a virgin to me.Exactly what threat was made? I don't hear any threats being made. The gaurds claim they have it on tape. Two people arrested for not knowing when to shut up,and assuming they had some rights.I will sleep safer at night knowing that these two shoppers have been denied entry to the States. Not!
I have some problems believing in that. I know he was a dick with the officers but... That audio seems played. At the end you hear the jail door like he was already in there. I don't know but it's strange.
Anyway, Bodah's point still stand: That's not how you cross a border
I've had the US border guards ask me some pretty dumb questions but one sure fire way to guarantee a bad day is cop a 'tude with 'em.
However, that being said, I remember one crossing into Detroit, there was 4 of us in the car going to Ann Arbor and I was in the backseat passenger side. The broad at the booth proceeded to ask the driver 4 questions( can't remember what they were now). She then proceeded to ask the the guy on the passenger side the same 4 questions in the same order. Then, the same 4 questions to the guy beside me. By the time she got to me, I made the mistake of answering the first question before she finished asking it. She then got all pissy, and I do mean PISSY and went on a rant about how could I know what she was going to ask me before she asked it and blah blah blah... I told her it didn't take the Amazing fucking Kreskin to figure it out. We didn't make it across that night
Seriously, as much as I wanted to be upset with the border guard, I can't be. AT ALL. The Canadian guy was being unnecessarily combative from the beginning.
There's a pretty obvious code when crossing the border. Cooperate, don't be an idiot, and you'll be fine. Duh.
My way of handling US border guards is to stay well away from them. I wouldn't cross the border if I was invited by Mr. Obama himself.
The question of what store the guy is going to is a little ridiculus, but the behavoir of the Canadian was way out of line. The correct way is Yes sir, No sir, How high sir?
and yeah it sounds staged.
