Sounds like a great idea. Trying to find things like DaVinci's inquest is impossible. You can't buy it from the CBC either so if people have 'em that would be a real boon to us Canadian Drama fans.
Regarding usenet: I use it all the time but I haven't seen many Canadian shows on there. What binaries groups were you in I wonder?
just to let people know, this is still slowly in the works. I just am doing research before starting anything, and talking with some others to partner with for this project. If you are interested in building this Canadian Torrent community, contact me.
The site would most likely have its own tracker along with "links" to other torrents on other trackers, like my current testing site does.
On the tracker would only be Canadian content that is not available commercialy, or just very obscure to find. Like the show you mentioned above, or old Canadian shows that have not been brought to dvd. As well as NHL games, documentaries and that kinda stuff.
The site will also probably have its own forums, not sure on that yet. might just intigrate it into the CKA forums as a seperate section. that is undecided.
The site will probably be a private site, you would need to register to access it... and might even go the route that most smaller trackers do and make it invite only. Kinda like Gmail was, you get a certain amount of invites. Maybe contributing to the site will gain you more invites. And people that are just 100% leechers will probably get booted. This is how must private torrent communities are.
I like the idea of having a private torrent site. I'm a member of oink.me.uk, and even though they're Nazis, it's an amazing site of which to be a member.
I'd like to post some Canadian music, but I still can't get email confirmation.
to Akbar32 : try alt.binaries.multimedia. currently 22 minutes, air farce, mercer, intelligence, rent-a-goalie, corner gas and lots of docs are being posted there weekly
what about canadian porn ? I have lots of canadian porn.
Hey Canadaka - can we get the email confirmation fixed so I can upload some torrents?
great idea with the canadian tracker, so i can watch all the canadian content here in germany. Big THanks Canadaka
Oh, I was definately on hosting.canadaka.net/dev/torrents/ , from the first page of this thread.
Sorry about that, I uploaded some Canadian Music.
Why not try it again? I'd love to get my hands on ANY Beachcombers episodes. Also, a good Torrent site is mininova <dot> org for a lot of TV, Movies and the like. Not sure, but i got the Bob and Doug Mackenzie's 2-4 Anniversary either there or on Usenet.
Sorry about the weird <dot> crap, but I'm new therefore restricted to not post URLs.
Hey there,
I was chatting with the bloke who runs diwana (excellent Australian TV torrent site) and I mentioned I've been hoping to find a good site for Canadian TV torrents, and he pointed me here. I see that the link (torrents<dot>canadaka<dot>net) doesn't go anywhere useful right now, and that this thread hasn't been too active - does anyone know if there any likelihood that it may come to life?
I know that once in a while there are some more popular Canadian shows on some of the big torrent sites, but I've gotten hooked into a couple of specialist sites for TV torrents (diwana for Australian, uknova/thebox for UK) and it's really amazing what interesting shows exist out there that I'd otherwise never be able to see - both current and from the past. I know that there are similar Canadian shows out there, and I'd sure like to find a way to get 'em!
TIA,
Dan
I still have plans to develop a site, i just havn't had the time and now that its summer and i'm on a 2 month road trip, it will have to wait until the fall.
I will fix torrents.canadaka.net there is a temp test site there with a mailing list you can join to be notified when the site opens. Seems the database crapped out, should be an easy fix.
Definitely hope your Canadian torrent site gets up and running. I wouldn't be able to release caps at the moment, but I would share my arse off.
Now that Digital Distractions seems to have died off, there is definitely a demand.
Lots of great shows at the moment, such as a Canadian version of Who Do You Think You Are?
I'm slightly hesitant to start one now, the powers that be have been getting pretty aggressive towards torrent sites, raiding owners offices, legal threats and all that. Just last week Oniks creaters home was raided.
Unless I rented a server offshore somewhere and hosted the torrent site there. But i think its not safe to host a torrent site on the same servers as CKA.
Canadaka:
I think the way to do it would be to stay away from Music and Movies, at least from the beginning.
There are two British sites, one called "UKNova", and the other called "The Box", they are trackers for British content ONLY!
Their rules are only British TV shows. NO movies and NO music. That way the chances of anyone coming after them is very very small.
If you were to do the same here, I don't think you would have a problem, the CBC will not come after you since we the tax payers pay for it anyway! And I'm sure its not worth it for CTV and the other couple of Canadian stations. I think we can get CTV and Global with bunny ears anyway.
I'm sure there are many Canadian expats all around the world that miss their Canadian shows. I know that CBC has been putting up a lot more content on their web site these days, but the quality is pretty low and most shows still aren't on.
I know that from reading forums on other private torrent sites there is a demand for a Canadian only site, and since your site is already for Canadians it would be a great fit.
cheers,
