I am playing around with a different homepage layout for people with widescreen monitors.

If your browser window is more than 1200 pixels wide it will load this wider homepage.

I run 1920*1080 resolution so having the page wider is nice. I will be using the extra width to change the blocks shown on the right column to have more detail.

YESS !!! Please that would be great. I also have an HD monitor and i'm always zooming to read text to not get a headache after 5minutes.

Most websites have that thing for a centered column-made layout. That leaves 2 very wide blanks each site with nothing. I remember years ago when people had 640x480, 800x600 and new 1028x768 resolutions, the websites were made dynamics to adjust according to the different layout. In 2011, why the fixed layout ?

this will not increase the size of the text though... If you have a hard time reading the text you can zoom in

So, while getting about 60% more space you won't try to increase the size of the font ? Maybe you could at least make the site more compatible for a bigger font. Because, when increasing the font on the client size, all the layout is screwed up and the things are not placed at their proper place.

I can zoom in with Chrome or Firefox and nothing is screwed up or out of place...

I have a 23 inch widescreen with a 1920*1080 resolution too and can read the text without zooming in no problems. Maybe Proc needs to get his eyes checked. :D

Everything looks good when I zoom in too.

Are you just changing the home page, Canadaka?

Proculation @ Thu Feb 10, 2011 9:17 pm

Oh sorry... I was talking about changing the font size not zooming in...

Anyway. My question still stands. With a resolution that high, why not increase the font size a little ?

@raydan: hey, it's you to old fart here :P

Strutz @ Thu Feb 10, 2011 10:14 pm

The home page looks good Trev!

I don't see the need to increase font size though.

I think so, its the only page that needs the extra space.

I'm working on a new homepage layout here http://www.canadaka.net/home_test
not done yet

But Trev, with the statistics you are gathering, you should be able to see the percentage of visitors with X or Y resolution, no ?

lol.. not against you Proculation!

I have never had the need to zoom in that's all. The font size is fine for me (unless I take my glasses off)

Canadaka @ Thu Feb 10, 2011 10:39 pm

The font size will not change, its standard font-size, same as Google and majority of websites. If you can't read the text you have bad eyesight and would have a problem reading almost every website on the internet... so get glasses or page zoom.

FARRRRRRRRRRRT

Proculation @ Thu Feb 10, 2011 10:47 pm

wow i'm surprised that's that much spread out. And btw, for the font size, it was only a suggestion :P

I have no eyesight problem it's just that with the much higher resolution monitor we have now, Keeping a single layout is not very innovative. I'm not just talking about this site. Most websites are based on that too. Anyway, that was my opinion. Take it or leave.
