UPDATE 5/21/13: Two years and nine months after the Nanny Dog Myth Revealed was first published, BAD RAP, a major pit bull advocacy group publicly announced that it will no longer support the Nanny Dog myth because it endangers children. While it is too late for many children, hopefully many will be saved in the future. Thank you, BAD RAP
Yes, it's a myth. That's why there are so many old Victorian photographs of kids with their Nanny Dogs. Somebody went back in time and planted false evidence.

Sure there's old photos of dogs with kids. Lots of current photos too.
But what does that prove?
Lots of photos toward the bottom of that page, and each one has a story to it. Explained briefly under the photo.

Pit bulls account for more than 60% of dog attack fatalities in the US, but only account for 6% of all dogs.
That's not a theory based on a photo, that is a statistic. A fact.

Ok, what was this? Back in the late '80s, Frenchman River, Saskatchewan, we were hunting mulies in November. I was alone and shot a big buck a long ways from camp down a big ravine, I walked back to camp for help. After a rum or two we organized to go get the buck, three guys in the cab, three guys in the box. I was in the box huddled down out of the wind. Then the driver banged on the window, I looked up. There was a very large canide animal streaking across the white snow at an incredible speed, by the time I got up to see him he was just crossing our trail maybe 100 meters in front. The driver hit the horn and the beast turned its head, it was enormous and scary. It ran down into the next ravine and was gone. We were a bit spooked, we were camping out in tents and had no idea things like that were running loose.
A few days later when back on the ranch of our hosts, we mentioned this thing and they knew exactly what we were talking about, it'd ran past their place one day chasing deer and they'd chased it on horseback, to no avail. They'd been there three generations and they didn't know what it was. So what was it? Way worse than a pitbull.

That's why I was researching Cane Corso, Wolfhounds and the others - to see what would be both a good guard dog and a good companion. Seems the two are mutually exclusive. 
Good guard dogs will protect their territory, even from their owners. Same with pitbulls, they will protect their human 'pack', even if it's from the children down the block or the poodle 'invading' it's territory.

I still think my Dane is the perfect mix of guardian and companion, just hangs out and cuddles all day. Not the most energetic dog in the world, so someone who wants a dog who likes to play would be dissapointed.
