It starts out "the legend lives on from the Chippewa on down...", so it starts you right off thinking it's old.

Besides, when the song came out I wasn't listening to the words - it was all about the tune. When I hear my own young kids belting out lyrics like "I've been down to the bottom of every bottle" I realize why my own mother used to cringe when she heard me sing along to such classics as "Tonight's the Night". ;)

The legend he's speaking of is the lake, not the shipwreck. Last I checked, a canoe wasn't considered a ship capable of hauling ore.

Yeah, I had to get a bit older before I really understood all of what was in that song - especially some of the double entendres. 8O

When that photo was taken the shirt was probably in style. I don't tend to judge music on what the musician likes to wear anyway. [huh] That's why radio is gooooood. R=UP

He's a very good songwriter. Check out the tracks;

There are many many more wrecks in lake, that have claimed WAY more lives that the Fitz. The stories of some of wrecks are heart wrenching.

I remember when i first heard the song. It was six years ago I was lying in bed and it came on the radio. I just listened to the lyrics and found it to be very moving. It was the first Gordon Lightfoot song I heard and it was the first id heard of the Edmund Fitzgerald. But far from the last. I love the song, it is one of my favourites.

Overview
Not only is Lake Superior the largest of the Great Lakes, it also has the largest surface area of any freshwater lake in the world. It contains almost 3,000 cubic miles of water, an amount that could fill all the other Great Lakes plus three additional Lake Eries. With an average depth approaching 500 feet, Superior also is the coldest and deepest (1,332 feet) of the Great Lakes. The lake stretches approximately 350 miles from west to east, and 160 miles north to south, with a shoreline almost 2,800 miles long. The drainage basin, totaling 49,300 square miles, encompasses parts of Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ontario. Most of the Superior basin is sparsely populated, and heavily forested, with little agriculture because of a cool climate and poor soils.
