The Voyageurs
Last night on tv here in Scotland, there was a show on called 'Ray Mears Bushcraft'. I don't know if any of you have seen it, but it was fantastic!!
Ray Mears is from England, and I guess he does these nature documentaries on survival or something like that, but anyway, the first episode that was on, he was in the back country of Canada, with a 94 year old First Nation, building a birch bark canoe from scratch!! He was talking about the Voyageurs and the fur trade industry. Amazing to watch. The second episode came on after and he paddled this canoe down hundreds of miles down a river in Quebec, I can't remember the name of it at the moment, but he was retracing the steps of the Voyageurs...it was wicked, and I was really proud to watch it
Then it clicked in that I have a book called 'Voyageurs', so I went into my bedroom and got it. Realised it was written by a Scottish woman and it's based on a true story. I'm only a few chapters in, but it's really good too. It's great coming across stuff on Canadian history over here in Britain. It's so few and far in between that whenever I see something in the bookstore or on tv, I have a little freak attack. LOL
Ahh..
If you like Canadian humour get a book on PET.
I doubt I'll find it here lol, I'll have to make a list of all the books I want and get them when I come back this summer lol
I'm curious, Canada is rarely mentioned in England? I find that odd.
I wouldn't know, I don't live in England, I'm up in Scotland lol, but I mean it's hard walking into a bookstore and in the history sections, they've got everything you need for American history, but very few stuff on Canada unless it ties in with the American history in some way. It's strange!
Well that is strange quite honestly, especially since Canada was born through the British Empire.

Just look in the section on igloos, mounties and lumberjacks.
LOL
Where abouts in Scotland?

Bugger, I had a whole reply typed out, hit a wrong key and lost the whole darn thing!
Anyway, I was saying that it was a really rude surprise to me, considering the links that Canada has with Britain. Even the travel sections in the bookstores are lacking, and I'm not even talking about the small bookstores either, I mean the UK versions of Chapters and other major chains. Waterstones and Ottakars.
I'm always on the hunt for Canadian history books, but I've had to order them online from Chapters because I just can't find them over here.

I live just outside Edinburgh. I can see the city from my flat actually.

Spent lots of time in Scotland, mainly, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, Falkirk, Perth, Dundee.
Fixing computers at British Telecom offices.
Don't we have any voyageur deniers or haters out there?
I dunno how much Canada gets mentioned in G.B. but they seem happy to get any music we send them. Them people in Scotland thought, they promise ya tee shirts and never send 'em.

I've been to all those places. I've seen more of Scotland than most Scots have lol. Stirling is my favorite, my husband and I were married there.
