Holland and Amsterdam is just as big a difference as Toronto and Canada 
But, yeah, some (well, most I know )are nice

I had a great time in Amsterdam numerous times...beautiful country and friendly people

In liberal Holland their side of the story is probably irrelevant as a Dutch judge is statistically unable to fathom a defensible reason for kicking the snot out of someone, gay or otherwise.
Granted, some few Duthc judges may be grounded in reality, but I know little to nothing of their existence. The Dutch judges I do know of are predictably lenient to muslim thugs and predictably harsh to people who defend themselves from muslim thugs.
That said, I will reserve judgment until the boys are back in the hands of their CO.
