perhaps, but it seems like you would torture anyway (in that extremely rare situation), why not take that route? it's not addictive anyway, like say heroin. that is chemical torture for sure.

Britain, France, USA, Canada (according to these Canadians http://www.fathers.ca/ ), Belgium, Italy, Israel, and a whole host of muslim governments...unless you'd like to go there and make my day by pointing out how muslim governments *all* endorse torture (even Turkey - 'moderate' muslim government).
All have been accused of torture in recent years and all have acknowledged using acknowledged forms of torture. Sleep deprivation is used in Canada and Belgium as an interviewing technique and the technique is considered torture by Amnesty International.
Then all are walking down the line to where anything is justified. Take a look at the US, while I am confident it will never go as far as it has in other countries, bush has managed to get himself the power to wiretap congress members with impunity, to secretly detain any US citizen and any person around the world, and torture them, with no repercussions.
The intelligence agencies are again acting without a hint of sufficient congressional oversight, as they did when they created Pinochet. The CIA has been around since the 1950s and not once has a single one of their blackops benefitted the citizens of the united states. It is not the case that the documents are classified, since anyone who saved the United States in the 50s, 60s, or 70s is no longer at risk from the revelation. The simple fact of the matter is that after WWII the intelligence community changed, rather then being a group of individuals versed in the ideals of liberty, fighting for freedom at any cost, it became a group of incompetent fools, who have done tremendous harm to the country that they claimed to be defending.
Before you tell me that there is no proof of what i have said, the mere fact that they can haapen is worrying, and the mere fact that Bush argues for them is proof, Ceaser didn't go to the Senate to ask to be emperor so that he could reform the senate, and presidents don't ask for powers they aren't going to use. Perhaps concrete proof won't come for at least 20 years, but by then its too late, and so far, everything that has gotten out, from the NSA wiretapping US citizens, to Abu Ghraib, has been horrifying to any decent and upstanding citizen of the United States.
Perhaps treasonous elements would sacrifice our liberties in order to secure political power from cowards and fools, but these are no Americans. True americans still live by the creed of "Give me Liberty or Give me Death" we do not life by half measures because we are too afraid of what our enemies might do. And for all your talk of how you'd go and shoot the terrorists, because you're some moral justified soldier for whats right, only reveals your deep cowardice and shrinking from the ideals of this country.
