Thanks! I'm excited. Here is possibly a stupid question: Is basic training Monday to Friday? I've heard that there is running early in the morning, and classroom stuff, but can anyone shed light on the schedule for basic? Any info (that you're allowed to disclose) would be very much appreciated.

In Cornwallis it was Monday to Friday. Unless you were in shit and confined to base or barracks, which was rare, you explored the local pubs, restaurants and sights and came backat night. A bunch of us, in our 7th week had weekend leave to visit Saint John, New Brunswick. Once I was in Fleet School, I was gone almost every weekend for the entire weekend(saw all of the Maritimes, and a big chunk of New England.. I pulled an allnight firewatch because of a storm the night before my TQ3 started and as a result I only did one watch(and was paid for it) the entire time I was at Stadacona and Windsor Park.

Its 24/7 technically. For the first few weeks it will be everyday, and they will be shutting the lights off at 10pm. If you are sleeping or working on kit... that is up to you. After those first few weeks you will be given weekends off, then it will be Monday to Friday until you get to the field. Then it will be back to 24/7. Just have fun, remember no matter how good you are they will tell ya your inspections are crap. Just learn to have fun with all of it. Just do your best and if you need help with something ask the person next to ya, and if they suck at something help em out. That's all they are really trying to teach you.

In Cornwallis it was Monday to Friday with lots thrown in on the weekend. We were always in shit and confined to barracks and later base. A bunch of us were let out on 7th week and visited Halifax. We had so much fun it was our last weekend off base. In my defense I didn't know that would actually crack the tub and yes, I was under age, but hey, no one didn't ever ask me for ID at anytime prior to the police showing up. I didn't hire the hookers. After that, there was only 3 times we were permitted to go to the Green & Gold. One of those being grad...

Really don't sweat it. A lot has changed since the days before rights and shit. Just get/stay fit which makes it marginally easier. Thousands have made it before you and thousands will after you. It's fear of the unknown that can be the big obstacle. You'll be fine.

I think we were allowed to go to the G&G after our fourth or fifth week. Third week was that 'life skills' course, a complete waste of time. I always went to church on Sunday. For me, everything was hurry up and wait and trying not to fall asleep during movies. The week we spent in Alergrove was a hoot. Too bad we didn't have paint ball guns ..... I pitied the poor bastards that went to battleschool.

ShepherdsDog @ Sun Jul 10, 2011 7:44 pm

Any of you join the Cornwallis page on FB?

SprCForr @ Sun Jul 10, 2011 8:33 pm

Nope. I just went with the Branch and Regimental FB page.

The G&G wasn't much missed because we never got to go. You really have no clue as to how typical your recruit course is until you can talk to others who went through at same time in a different platoon or earlier/later time. I figured that was par for the course (except for the hotel incident). It turned out that one of the Pl staff and one of the Coy staff (both Fd Engrs) would be my Sect Comds over the next couple years and they said we were absolute shitheads. Getting belt fed cock at CFRS made the belt fed cock during the Combat Leaders Course somewhat easier to take. Nah, that shit during the CLC was pro level. Friggin evil bastards.

I said I'd buy my recruiter a beer, but I'd hospitalize a couple of the staff from that course (CLC) if I had a chance of meeting them again. One in particular.

Edit: Specify which crse.

Really? Our biggest trauma was being kept up until 3AM on our last night by the SIU while they searched our barracks and questioned people. Some stupid shits thought it would be funny to smoke some dope on our Grad night. One of the guys that I did my TQ3 & TSQAB with was a remuster from the RCR(a fair number remustered as firefighters) and had been an instructor in Cornwallis the year before I joined. he was a good shit, funnier than hell and he taught us all a few helpful moves in unarmed combat...that I didn't fully appreciate when I was the demo dummy. He was a Master Seaman and I made another dumb comment about poultry within hearing. I curled with him at Windsor Park. Can't think of any instructors that I wanted to shit kick...not even the little PERI fairies.

SprCForr @ Mon Jul 11, 2011 9:51 am

Those bastards went way too far. Weak leadership at the top end let them carry it on. Two of the staff from that course I still have a lot of respect for, but I guess it was a perfect storm thing.

Of course that was almost 30 years ago, so that'd make them just over 60 or so. another couple years should slow down the reaction time nicely!

I am coming to the sad realization that I need to get into better shape than I currently am; running is fine, but the strength needs to improve, i.e. push-ups. I have a month to get it together. Getting a little nervous. Also, I have my medical to re-new on Wednesday. Can't wait.
