So much for the ads that claim Harper supports the military.

Short of an attack on us, a close ally or a world crisis, Canada will not do anything for the military regardless of who is in power. WW1, WW2, Cold War....as soon as Russia, U.S start chugging out warships and other ships to mine the arctic, Canada will have the largest fleet to do damage.....(hopefully history repeats itself)

I'm sure Elizabeth May would be right up there purchasing new weapons and kit. Really.

Yes she would, and unlike pekerhea... err Harper, she would make sure they were Canadian made.

you are kidding me right?

maybe green peace vessels, but i don't see any evidence that may would build up our military no matter what happened. she might try to o switzerland and stay neutral, but that wouldn't work without an insane military presence that no one has the balls o ante up and purchase.

The only 'defence' strategy I've seen from loony-May is that she would rename DND the "Department of Peace".

Doesn't sound like she's gonna buy any new kit for the CF or do you know something we don't and that our pacifist Green friends have not told us?

Really, for a new poster you are not giving any foundation to your 'drive by' posts.

roger-roger @ Sun Oct 12, 2008 6:28 pm

You never know she might go all 1984 on us and turn the country into a fascist environmentalist state. Where the Department of Peace would express the views of The Department of Pacifism, to bring about the second phase of the "Green Shift" the "Green Order". XD

Canadian_Mind @ Sun Oct 12, 2008 8:05 pm

ugg, so the green party is also a collection of fascist fucks?

Thought Neo-Nazi's were banned.

roger-roger @ Sun Oct 12, 2008 8:07 pm

You can be a fascist and not be a Nazi, it is possible CM.

Canadian_Mind @ Sun Oct 12, 2008 8:10 pm

I'd rather lump em all together and compare them to the worst. It makes it easier to hate on all fascists equally

Wow, with a mature argument like that you've convinced me.

isn’t that bigotry, a attribute aligned with fascists?

Canadian_Mind @ Sun Oct 12, 2008 8:14 pm

Fuck it. Sometimes the best way to deal with a fascist is to destroy them with their own fascist policies.

These ships have nothing to do with the Russians, or the Chinese, or any other nation for that matter. These ships let our other ships operate anywhere in the world. That makes them important.

Canadians always bitch that nobody notices us or pays attention to us. Well guess why? We don't have a global presence like other larger countries (like the UK and France for example). If Canadians are content to be considered the same as the Dutch, Belgians and New Zealanders, then go ahead and scrap these ships.

But if we want to step up and be counted, to participate in anti-piracy mission off Somalia or stop weapons smugglers in the Arabian Sea or even help our neighbours after a huge hurricane, then ships like this are vital to those efforts. Our sealift capability was crucial in getting equipment to the Suez and Cyprus, and was used extensively after 9/11 in the Arabian sea.

Without these ships, our navy becomes little more than a coastal patrol force. While I agree wholeheartedly in defending Canada, we need more than just that.
