I'm sure everyone shares that sentiment, and I don't want to appear overly fatalistic, but don't count on a good outcome. The sea temperature in the Baltic at this time of year is just above freezing. Life expectancy in those waters, even if he was weaing his weather jacket, is mere minutes.

It can be, but it is definitely cold. There's a good chance the ship had a layer of ice on it. Upper decks would have been slippery.
