Very spiffy "Star Wars" technology.
Betcha the air space above those tests was closed. Very cool stuff Bart.
We need to make this an offensive device and we need to deploy it everywhere. I bet you could just leave the thing on auto-pilot and let it pacify unruly populations.
If only it could track communists...
I must say though, it is quite a piece of tech, perfect for Defence.....
Land based 20mm phalanx system for point defence against morters, artillery, etc.
A smile, as in, while smirking: "You guys are fucking ridiculous..."
The idea that incomming morter rounds could be hit and counter-battery fire going out before the first rounds hit is something that makes me smile.
Problem is the bastards fire the morters, rockets, etc, from playgrounds, markets, etc, knowing that the responce will yeald bloody bodies that they can parade for the goulish western media.
Any body got some marshmellows? Hotdogs perhaps? Seriously cool device though. I wonder what that would do to flesh
You're a sad little fellow...Definately too much BF2.
From what I can see, using a .50 as an example...
20x102 is .1kg tungsten slug moving at 1,113m/s.
12.7x 99 is .0485kg slug moving at 887m/s.
Both are solid slugs and both would go through with enormous hydrostatic shock, maybe. You can read through the whole "terminal ballistics" here

Form what I read, some thought the 20mm not good enough for the ship based systems so they are going to this:

Alotta truth in this comment:
"this may be nice against terrorists with older weapons, but if someone(a state for instance) is serious, it'll take about a month and all their rockets/bombs/mortars got a reflecting layer which nullifies the light-absorption of the ammonition, which is required for the proper function of the laser.
for the time being a good solution, even though a bit expensive.
"
Relax Riden, I was just fucking around. That would be very cruel to use on a human. Only a few deserve that. It is a really cool device though. Could change defense as we know it.
P.S. Haven't played BF2 in a good 4 months
