I own a book called Seven Roads to Hell by Donald R. Burgett.
This is one of the BEST accounts of a combat infantryman in WW2. It is about his company's role during the Battle of the Bulge. What makes this such an amazing book is, it wasn't written from the memories of of a man many years removed. It was raw, fresh and gritty. Mr Burgett had basically written his own personal after action reports and used those notes to write the book decades later. He draws you into the battle with him and almost makes you feel like you experienced it yourself.
Oh btw he wasn't just yer standard ground pounder, he was with the prestigious 101st Airborne.
I seriously recommend reading the book.
Another excellent book is called Flyboys by James Bradley. It's the account of what happened to 8 navy pilots shot down over Chichi Jima. An event that was classified up until 2001. This book also gives a great background of the history and relationship between the US and Japan leading up to the war. Without reading like a dry history text.
I'll keep an eye out for them.
2x on Flyboys. It's a brutaly graphic series of stories on the pacific theater.
I'll look up the one you reccomend.
You won't be disappointed.
I'm a big military history fan, I will check it out.
