This is just a rate for me I'm afraid, call it a peeve if you wish.

It seems that the current wave of Support Our Troops is like the trendy thing to do. I see I in lots of places, but where was it years ago? Afghan isn't the first place we've been shot at in the last few years, but it's getting all this new attention.

I know that the support is appricated (even just if it's lip service), but with all the stickers, shirts, signs etc ... who is getting the money made? I don't think it goes to support us, just to line some one else pockets, profiting from this trendy (and our blood in round about way). Yes, I know not every one profits, but I know they are out there.

Has for Red Fridays, good idea, but shouldn't you be wearing it everyday not just one day a week? I know alot of spouses who have been supporting us for years don't wear it, cause they don't feel the need to show everyone what they feel everyone should be doing anyways.

So endth the rant.

So are you saying that it's too little too late?

ArmyMan @ Sun Dec 03, 2006 7:42 am

Yup, way too late

Hey Boss, nice country you're in just now. I wasn't there until Roto 13, but it was a beautiful country all the same.

I could be a bit mistaken here but sense bosnia has canada been in a war till Afaganistan? Canada has done a lot of "Peace keeping" missions yes, but actualy been engaged in an armed conflict sense bosnia? There is a difference a minor one but that difference ways heavily upon soldiers and their loved ones. The red fridays as a show of support is a great idea to help boost morale for those loved ones who worry about their soldiers and a soldier home on leave or about to head out sees this and feels a sense of comfort. Knowing that there are people who support him or her as a soldier even if they disagree with the reasons why he is there does help.

Just my thoughts on this.

Hi ArmyMan,

I've been noticing that, too - and while I'm sort of glad to see it, I'm also questioning why it's only happening now, instead of years ago, when it was needed most. I've also wondered about the profits from the sales of shirts and signs and what-not, because our men and women who are out there in places like Afghanistan risking their lives every second of the day sure as hell aren't seeing any of it. Inadequate support of our troops has been a long-standing issue that many Canadians have wondered about and complained about, I know.

Harper promised to beef up our military and to start pouring more money into it. But the soldiers on leave are still having to go to the Food Banks because they don't have enough money to take care of things themselves. How humiliating for them... Image

I don't agree with some of the missions our soldiers have to be involved in, but I support our Canadian troops because they're trying to make a difference in the places they're stationed in, and facing death at almost every turn.

For what it's worth, ArmyMan, I am very proud of our brave men and women who are serving our country, and I support them.

Water under the bridge.

The profits go to supporting MFRC support programs to the families.

Soldier on Wayne. Soldier on Garth...

Okay, so why are our military families still having to go to Food Banks again? I'm still unclear about that...

Can you explain this a bit to me, I'm unsure of part "instead of years ago, when it was needed most." What was going on then that your speaking of?

What I mean, Stratos, is that our soldiers have been putting their lives at risk for various missions for many, many years, now, but - and this is just my own perspective on things - it doesn't seem like there's been much in the way of public support until recently. Of course, it's entirely possible that maybe I was expecting something more... visible, I guess. In that sense, the U.S. kind of has one up on us, because they're very public about the support of their troops...

Ah ok I see/understand what your meaning now. In my view, as an ex-soilder, it might be a bit late but any support is truly appreciated.

Blue_Nose @ Sun Dec 03, 2006 9:49 am

I fail to see the value in wearing red clothes. How is this supporting anything? It's a false sense that you're somehow helping the people who are ACTUALLY SUPPORTING THE TROOPS - you know, by actually doing something important and beneficial.

I was here for 7 and 8 and I now I live here permanently with my wife.

Saying that, I appreciate the Red Friday's and don't care why they all of a sudden started becoming popular.

So, what is it you want? Should we be wearing red every day or not bother because we don't feel the need to show it?

What do the spouses feel everyone should be doing anyway? Wearing red? Supporting the troops? Why just the troops? Why shouldn't we wear blue on Tuesdays to support our police? Yellow on Thursdays for the firemen? How about White Wednesdays for medical personnel?

These people are all doing their jobs. The only one I actively follow is jeans day for Childrens hospital.

You know what, Lily? Personally, I think this is actually a great idea! I think wearing these colors would be a tremendous morale booster for the people who work so hard to keep our countries and our cities safe. In fact, I just might make it a personal mission of mine to do just that....

Stratos, I feel it's incumbent on all of us to find ways to show our support. And yes, I agree that it's late in coming, but better late than not at all. [flag]
