I need to find an album to give as an Xmas gift.
My sister likes Great Big Sea but we've exhausted that paticular marque.
I'm looking for bands that do similar sea shanty/drunken newfy songs.
I've tried to pass off The Pogues but the're a bit to punkish, and the Chieftans are too hit or miss.
I'll trade you near-worthless opinions of Tom Waits, Pink Floyd, and a small, but strangely enthusiastic opinion of far too many Guilbert & Sullivan Operas.
Looking for something along the lines of Great Big Sea?
(another Tom Waits fan here... hardly worthless!)
Men in kilts
Irish Descendents
Floggin Molly
You can usually find an album with a mix of stuff, since the music isn't really popular these days.
Not really newfie but interesting nonetheless. Hayseed-Dixie is a Bluegrass band with a twist. They do covers of AC/DC and Kiss and their own stuff too.
Thank you one and all for the leads.
I will start the screening tomorrow. I know my sister won't even consider such hardship but that's my sorry row to hoe
Blue-Nose: My/our appreciation of good lyrics and the "atmosphere" that Tom serves is lost on my sister. I find that those who know about Tom either hate or love him. There is no middle ground, and no common ground.
That said, I'm now listening to more of Randy Newman who also paints a good story, but not as broad as Tom.
Cheers all.
I too feel that tom waits is the most talented artist to be found in the second hand CD store.
Canadian heat mentioned them already, but you can't go wrong with Flogging Molly.
Thanks Xerx. I'll start there. They sound like the best choice.
As for Tom: I get tired of explaning that songs like "downtown train" is Tom.
I have not heard "Nighthawks at the Diner". The last Tom album I bought was... Raindogs? I'm looking at those lyrics and I might look at that for a pre-selected X-mass prezzy.
It's a live show at some sort of lounge... a whole lot of story telling, with a great acoustic ensemble... must have if you love his lyrics.
Spirt of the West is an older band, not exactly newfie music, but with a political twist at times.
check them out!
Speaking of older bands, there is another which cannot go unmentioned. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you...
The Irish Rovers!!!
Ok, some of their stuff is far removed from their Celtic origins but when they do more traditional stuff they do it quite well.
Uh...
Captain Tractor?
Moxy fruvouse??
