Recommendations to the future generations

To you we pass the torch, or .. That’s not music, that’s noise.

I buy my daughter I-tunes cards and as a price, I make her download and listen to a song that I believe is a classic. Not a huge price when 1/25 songs are something you didn’t choose.

Some background: She takes dance and wants to sing (woe is me..)
I’m a huge Guilbert & Sullivan fan so she’s seen Mikado and Pirates live
She’s also seen Oklahoma, The Music Man . We’re going to West Side Story at the end of this month.
She also grew up watching Blues Brothers so US R&B is also on the list. Can you spell R.E.S.P.E.C.T.?

My question is: What songs from the 60’s 70’s 80’s do you feel are a solid foundation.
If you were me. What would you recommend?

Top of my list is Pink floyd: Run, .. Or carefull with that axe Eugene
Gtrandchester Medows

Then we go straight into the Kinks..
:-)

Imo, almost anything from those years is good... Once you get to the 90's, most is crap

(the Stock, Aitken and Waterman-clones, the Pop, the R&B, Hip hop and Rap, the Rock that ain't hard anymore...)

It's not my style, but Micheal Jackson did a great deal for music, and Thriller is a classic...

ridenrain @ Fri Apr 04, 2008 10:00 pm

Yes. She has said that Thriller is a classic.

Troubling is the rap music. I always said that lyrics are one of the definitions between pop crap and something good yer rap has gobs of words that only a punk would agree with.

Brenda @ Fri Apr 04, 2008 10:03 pm

Rap is dramatic... The music sucks and the lyrics even more... Then again, if you do rap, you could do the Stock, Aitken and Waterman-clones too, just to have the opposite of rap

I don't know the groups you mention. if you can provide links that would help.
This is what I'm recomending.

Hey Riden, sorry dude, not the slighest clue as to what you are referring to. Classic Rock would be considered as for example: Led Zeppelin, Rush, Eagles, The Doors, SteppenWolf, Guess Who and so many others.

Screw you Brenda ! (It's a joke dear). Seriously, the early 90's offered a lot of good music.

Stock, Aitken and Waterman is a producers trio, that prodoced people like Rick Astley (...), Jason Donovan, Samantha Fox, Mel and Kim, Kylie Minogue, but also Debbie Harry, Cliff Richard and Elton John. In the '90's, all their bands or artists sounded alike, and most were one or two-day flies.

ridenrain @ Fri Apr 04, 2008 10:27 pm

Sorry Brenda. I think I understand where you`re comming from but that`s still way too pop for me. I really hate pop because it`s here today, gone tomorrow yet folks like Elvis Costello have made it work.

Brenda @ Fri Apr 04, 2008 10:32 pm

 I didn't say I liked their artist, right? ROTFL

So you are looking for real classics? Classic bands or songs? Rock? Elvis Presley? Metallica?

ridenrain @ Fri Apr 04, 2008 10:41 pm

Sorry. I thiought I was clear. I`m very backward in popular music so please forgive me.
I`m looking for music that is timeless
For exampple, I`m listenig to the Clash: Magnificent seven. I think it`s a classic but that`s my opinion.

There are a number of songs that tell a time, place and story and these are the things I feel I must pass on to others.
