Omni News (in Ontario) just announced the results of a poll in the Italian Canadian community.
93% of them voted to get rid of our Queen.

An example of disrespect for our heritage and history?

Multiculturism showing that incoming cultures don’t value Canadian culture?

Or should we rid our selves of the British legacy and replace it with……………..?

Comments please?

Well the Queen or the Monarchy in general has a big place in Canada’s history. I do think we should respect the views of all Canada’s but she has no real political power and is nothing to be afraid of. Canada was founded as a British colony and I don’t think we should forget that.

Why do people still get worked up over the Queen? She has no power and she doesn't get any of our money, so why the fuss?

If we were to do away with the Queen and the Governor General, we would have to change Canada's political system drastically.

My understanding, and please correct me if I’m wrong, is that the Queen holds little real power in her own nation, and is just a figurehead. If that’s the case, then she holds no power here. However, I see nothing wrong with giving her a title in Canada, to honor the English half of our roots.

Who cares what the Italians think?
My wife's family is sicillian. My father in law thinks mussolini was not such a bad guy.In fact he used to have a beagle hunting dog he named mussolini.I have found that there are alot of semi pro-fascist Italians from that erea or related to someone from that era who are somewhat sympathetic to the these types of people and alot of THEM don't seem to like the UK or the British in general.I think they might be a little bitter still, uh-huh.My brother-in-law's dad was a WWII veteran and he is kinda like that, cuz of the stories his dad told him.Although everytime I bring up some counterpoints to him he drops it like a hot potato.Like how many italians died in russia, fighting for Hitler and mussolini.Or about how if mussolini had not sided with germany the allies would not have had to kick their asses.
Love it or leave it baby!

I say keep the Queen so that we can laugh at her everyday. Make my days joyful :D

Having the queen on our $$$$$$$$ is probably the reason our currency has less international value than the Euro or the $$$$US.

A big shock from our New France chum. Quebec has always shown no respect for Canadian history or tradition but wants the rest of Canada to respect them....mmmm very Gallic!

We have erased our Imperial history , the values that built Upper Canada and Confederation and replaced it with what? Nothing, a warm and fuzzy nothing.

You have to admire the Quebeckers, they know what they want. It's a pity the rest of Canada doesn't.

Get over it! Besides, didn’t that same political power (the one that also handed New France its on the Plains of Abraham) safeguard your cultural distinction (Quebec Act!?!?!?)?Read a book and stop astounding us with your consistent knack for historical ignorance.

I say we keep the Queen. She's a symbol of our Nation and keeps at least one important tie to Britain.

EyeBrock @ Fri Mar 18, 2005 4:41 pm

Well said Mustang. It looks like the Quebeckers just teach hatred of the Brits from generation to generation. They really need to get over losing in 1759.

Whining about losing are traits of the french in general,no? 8)
