I've read the conservative policy on the age of consent.

Instead of an Age of Consent at 14 we would have an age of protection at 16

I think thats a good idea except keep a consent at 14 and allow 14-18 because to be honest if they raise it at least 1 out of every 10 teenagers will go to jail...


what does everyone else think of raising the age of consent

or putting an additional age of consent for relations with adults?

   

This is a topic that is as dangerous to address as it is to talk about the judiac peoples and the holocost.

The thought here shouldn't be so much the age, cause large numbers of girls under the age of 14 engage in sex. The issue should be the age of the partner involved.

Two 10 year olds experimenting shouldn't have the male 10 year old punished. Nor should this apply to two 14 year olds.

Generally it is the female that is the instigater early on as the female gender reaches puberty sooner and this brings on the sexual heat and desire. much personal experience on this fact.

A consideration should be applied to and made for the age discrepency of the two participants, consent or not. An 18 year old taking advantage of a 14 year old is wrong. This is only 4 years difference. But applied to a 22 year old and an 18 year old, this difference is not seen as bad.

Simply applying a age rule is not addressing reality. And punishing the male is justifying a stereo-type where the instigator may not be the male.

   

Very good points made and could likely be hard if not impossible to argue against but in regards to the 14 year old female and 18 year old male I remember one such situation in which an 18 year old friend was dating a 13 year old girl , in which the Mom did not condon it but because she seen this impossible puppy love thing going on with her daughter and the boy ,she equpped her duaghter with an IUD . The daughter voulunteered it which was mostly morally instilled by her older sisters . The girl complained of some discomfort but the distant end result was the girl and boy got married when she became of age and almost a decade later they seperated when she was 22 and they had no children afterall .

Putting it at 14 was a stupid Trudeau idea that was about as well thought out as an origami crash helmet.

   

So raising the age will do what?....... stop kids that are 14 and 15 from having sex?......No.....kids younger than 14 are having sex now and the law isn't stopping them. I don't think it will stop the pedifiles either cause they like them younger than 14 anyway and they're still being the freaks they are. Let's face it, our children are being robbed of their childhood by society, not a law on if they can have sex till 16.

   

Cops and the courts are always whining for more laws.
Raising the age to 16 will at least give them the ability to arrest people who hire 14 year old prostitutes. It will also give the social systems more ability to do something to keep these kids of the kiddie strolls.

It may no be the perfect solution but it's better than doing nothing.

   

It will appease the right-wing Christians. Harper doesn't want to get into a gay-marriage debate because he is going for a majority, but he has to throw the right-wing Christians a bone or they'll eat him alive.

I agree with you QBC, that it will make little difference to kids.....But at the same time I don't think the law will do any harm either....

I'm just saying the reason behind it is strategic politics.

   

We have laws to stop the kiddie prostitutes, the judges and lawyers just don't prosecute the handlers to the fullest so the police don't bother when they know the outcome in court. We have laws on the books to handle almost all the problems we have, we just have to make the courts prosecute the offenders, not waste our time writing new laws.

   

There are already laws (child exploitation) that address child prostitutes. You think the cops will start charging people who hire them with rape?

That's an interesting concept, and although I would love to see that happen.....but I don't know if the legality of it would allow that to happen..

   

It sounds like you are simply playing party politics.
If the only argument you have is "waste of resources", I'd suggest you tour the election forum and refresh you're memory with all the money wasted by the Liberals.

I also refute that this is a bone for the "Christian right" You might want to open that up because I'm not sure of any religion that welcomes this behavior.

I know the Christian right will only be happy when all sex is against the law, and you need a license to have kids. And you're only allowed to have sex under the supervision of a priest or some shit.

My point was that It's not just the Christian boogey man but most other religions don't approve of "under age" sex.
Agreed, if two teens fall in lust and go at it in the garden shed and they take precautions, it's not a really a problem.
If Johns to rent 14 year old prostitutes can have another charge slapped on them, that's a good thing.
If the justice institute won't or can't prosecute, then we need to fix that too.

   

I don't believe that raising the age will change anything. What really needs to happen is PARENTS to start taking a more active role in thier childrens lives and start instilling more moral ideas in thier children. Sit down and talk to your kids about sex and all the consquences involved in engaging in sexual activity, whether it be between two 14 year olds or not. Stop blaming all thier problems on other people or society in general and start taking some responsibilty for raising YOUR children.

Don't get me wrong I am by no means some Right wing Christian fanactic, but I do believe that parents need to start being more active in thier childrens lives. We need to sit and talk to them from time to time instead of sitting them in front of some electronic babysitter and expecting them to get valid advice from the internet or even thier friends.

They think the government should control everything, dictate who you can have sex with, who you can marry, etc, etc.....

   

Parents be involved in thier kid's lives? Where did you come up with that idea?
