Well folks, it's finally happened. BC and Alberta now have more people than the province of Quebec. In a fair and just world that would mean more seats out west and less out east in the next election. This unfortunately is not going to happen. Instead we in the west are going to have to be content with our palrty 60 someodd seats while Quebec keeps it's 75. If the boundries were to be redrawn, we would see a shift to 72 seats combined BC Alta, and 72 in Quebec.

But due to the elections act, this will not happen until at least 2013. That is the ten year marker on which seats are redistributed, and to top it off, under the same law, no province can be striped of seats due to population shift from one region of the country to the other. So what does this mean you may be asking yourselves. Well this, in my interpretation, and it may be wrong, means that even if we get our rightfull extra seats out here in the economic engine of the country come 2013, that Quebec will lose none. And we will still be under represented in the House of Commons.

I ask you friends, is this democracy??? Is the the vaunted representation by population we all love and believe in???? NO I SAY!!!!!!! As hard a pill as it is to swallow sometimes, Ontario and Quebec have allways controlled the destiny of this country's elections, but up until recently they had the majority of the population. While this may have sucked for people in the west, it was at least fair to the prinicpals of our system. We were indeed fairly represented by our population base. But no longer is this the case. Something needs to be done in the way of electoral reform to more equitably represent the needs and desires of the whole country.

Wheather this is a redispribution based on population at every election, or some sort of senate reform I shall leave for you to argue, but heed this warning all of Canada; If something is not done, this issue alone could case a surge in people flocking to the Western seperation movement. Something I hope we can all agree is a bad thing.

Vic

We need election reform now, I agree Ontario and Quebec have pushed their agenda up Atlantic Canada's ass long enough. It will be nice to see the power shift to Alberta and BC.

But is Quebec's population still high enough to warrant 72 seats? I could see if their population was declining, they should lose seats, however, if their population is equivalent to BC and Alberta's then the number of seats should remain the same in Quebec while giving us a boost.

I understand your frustration Vic, but even if we did balance out the seats in Parliament, it wouldn't make much of a difference. Look at the map sometime, BC and AB don't vote the same anyways. Almost 60% of BCers voted Lib/NDP, whereas 65% of AB voted Conservative.

Might also want to look at the fact that my riding Van Center which should be the crown jewel of Canadian politics elects who? Sometimes, there's a fuck up between theory and reality.

USCAdad.....Must be that fucking immigrant vote!

But seriously, it's been reported that more stupid people live in your region than anywhere else in Canada. Must be all that marijuana they smoke in your parts!

I'd rather have someone high on pot being polled about what the Canadian Government should do about blah blah than a Queber who's only interest is Quebec and the rest of Canada is usually told to go to hell.

How would this help Atlantic Canada? Many in the west consider Atlantic Canada to be a bunch of part-time fishermen living off E.I.

Ok not real sure here but in 2013 are you saying that Quebec will retain its 75 seats and the others will only gain to what ever number they should have, or will Quebec lose seats in 2013?

SireJoe @ Tue Oct 03, 2006 6:31 pm

According what I heard, it shouldbe based on something like 1 seat per 100k. So if there still remains that 7.5 mil or so then they should not lose any seats. Otherwise it wouldnt really make any sense....would it?
