Her initials are B.S...something to ponder..

Any reason to suspect she's lying about donating her salary?
None what so ever, fact is she doesn't need it.
All she is after is to make a name for herself. What else does she have to look forward too??
797 @ Thu Jan 26, 2006 11:46 pm
I don't know lily..call it a gutt instinct or something.I just don't trust her.
To me she seems like the type of person that wants to be on top and she doesn't care who she steps on to reach her goal.
I think I would vote for you before I voted for her..

And that, folks, is what's known as a back-handed compliment.

lol..Perhaps...
Maybe it's that I'm still bitter about her crossing the floor...Is that allowed?

I don't like her crossing the floor... although maybe some of her reasons were good.
Still... even as a CPC MP she was donating her salary to support youth in her community. How can you have a problem with that?
I don't have a problem with that at all.Good for her.
My problem is that I think she can't be trusted.
I've said this before....she is like canada's version of Paris Hilton..
Rich, spoiled and wants her name in the spotlight.
Regardless of how she does it..
I have no problem with crossing the floor. If it's against what you believe, follow your heart.
With that said, there's some questions.
Did she not know the people in the CPC?
She claims that the CPC "...did not represent the moderate views of mainstream Canadians" and suddenly she noticed that when she lost the leadership? Being the smart woman that she is, you'd figure she'd have a full understanding before she got involved.
How many times has a MP crossed the floor, days before a crucial vote and to be magically assigned a cabinet post? It's just too much of a coincidence.
The bottom line here is, Belinda Stronach wants to be Prime Minister of Canada. There was no hope within the CPC Party. This women is not an idiot, many people, including her, could see the end of Paul Martin and the infighting within the Liberal Party. She made headlines & got her name out to Canadians.
Bluntly put....she took the path of least resistance. She will run for Liberal Party leader, but she will lose. I doubt she will seek re-election next time around if that is the case.

she got elected to serve the people of her riding.
end of story.
all polititions should donate thier salary since they are there to serve the public, not themselves. good on her for doing that!

And where would they live, given that they'd work for free and couldn't afford a home?

am I the only one who thinks she talks about herself and uses the word I a little too much ? Maybe she belongs in places big on auto manufacturing like Oshgoshawa or Detroit.

I cannot put a finger on it, but the same way that some folks instinctively distrust Harper for reasons they cannot really pin point, I distrust Stronach. Call it a gut call I guess. I did not trust her when she was running for the leadership of the CPC, when I saw her on CPAC on the opposition benchs and then on the govt side.

All the more reason to not have her in Ottawa, I would take 100 Stephen Harpers types (you know people that worked for everything they have) to a whole cabinet of BSer's. She has no idea what a pay cheque is.
Can you imagine the laughter that goes on at family diner when she tells her father it was pay day today? He probably says let me use the cheque it to light my cigar.

Since the start of the election campaign, a number of residents have asked me to explain why I decided to join the Liberal Party.
To answer that question, I should begin by explaining why I got involved in politics in the first place. My decision to enter public life was driven by a desire to serve our community and our country. Simply put, I wanted to help make a difference.
In the past, I contributed to our community in various ways, including:
• volunteering on behalf of many worthwhile community organizations;
• participating in numerous policy panels and leadership councils relating to Canada’s competitive position in the global marketplace; and,
• as the former CEO of Canada’s largest automotive parts manufacturer, advising various levels of government on the state of the automotive industry.
Despite these modest contributions, I felt I could do more by getting directly involved in the political process. To that end, I decided to leave a rewarding career in January 2004 and I entered the race to become leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.
Although I lost the leadership contest, I committed my full support to the new leader, Mr. Stephen Harper. As a member of his caucus, I met some very fine parliamentarians that I continue to admire and respect to this day.
Over time, however, I became increasingly uncomfortable with the direction of the Conservative Party under the leadership of Stephen Harper. I felt that it did not represent the moderate views of mainstream Canadians. What’s more, I could not support Mr. Harper’s decision to defeat a budget that included much needed funding for our community. And I could not go along with his decision to join forces with the separatist Bloc Québecois. The consequences of bringing down the government at that time would have stacked the deck in favour of the separatists and would have posed a serious threat to national unity. And I have always considered myself a Canadian first, regardless of party.
It was the opinion of a large number of Canadians – as well as a large number of people here in Newmarket-Aurora – that Stephen Harper was putting short-term political interests ahead of Canada’s national interest. It was an opinion that I shared.
After much deliberation and soul searching, I concluded that I had no choice but to leave the party that I helped bring together and join the governing Liberal Party. I remain convinced that I did the right thing, and that I acted in the best interests of our country and our community. I remained loyal to the wishes of my constituents on a matter of principle.
Some people have raised the issue of whether I joined the Liberal Party for personal gain, despite the fact that I had fulfilled an election pledge to donate my MP’s salary to support youth in our community. I wish to repeat that I did not request a Cabinet position, nor was one offered to me as a reward to cross the floor. When the Prime Minister asked me to join his Cabinet, I had already made clear my intention to join the Liberal Party. As the Member of Parliament for Newmarket-Aurora, I was honoured to accept the Prime Minister’s invitation to join Cabinet, even though I knew that I might have been Minister for only a day.
I am proud to serve the people of Newmarket-Aurora. As your representative, I will continue to do everything in my power to improve the quality of life in our community, and I will continue to stand up and speak out for the best interests of our country.
I look forward to earning your continued support as a strong voice in Ottawa for our great community!
linkyInteresting that the above fact never gets mentioned. Say what you will about the woman - I admire her for that.
Lily, although what she is making as an MP is large, compared to what she is worth, it's peanuts.
She's in it for the power, not the money. She has money. She knew she was not going to reach the highest echelon of the conservative party and to punish them, she walked and joined the liberals at a critical time (and dumped her boyfriend, too).
This is definately something to admire her for.
Do yourself a favor and read the newsletter she sent out to her riding right before she crossed the floor and then read the above again. Makes your head spin...
I'll even try to find the reference for you, but it will have to be later as I have to get my kids ready for school

Giving money to the unfortunate is a crime to conservatives...And probably soon will be one for all of Canada.
