Canada, to a marginally greater degree than the USA, has incrementally implemented socialism over the years and while your budget managers could be said to be doing a good job, I align myself more with BC Conservative MP Colin Mayes who once said that it was relatively easy for the Liberals to deliver balanced budgets as they were awash in revenues because of Canada's fortunate trade balance with the USA. Mayes' point is that they were getting more money than they had planned on spending.

The USA, to a marginally greater degree than Canada, has incrementally implemented fascism over the years...

How does that sound? Socialism? Please. Your country is at least as close to fascism as Canda is to socialism. There are evils at both extremes, Bart. Somewhere on the spectrum from right to left is the perfect place to be. I don't know where that place is, but I can say without doubt that Canada is closer to it than the US of A. Guess what? The workers on the floor here in KY would agree with that statement. I never bring it up, they do.

BartSimpson BartSimpson:
In 1995 Canada gained US$18 billion in trade with the USA and in 2005 that figure was up to US$71 billion, or an increase of 394%.

Canadian government tax revenues on this trade actually increased a slightly disproportioate 420% with 2005 revenue on this figure (per NAFTA disclosures) of $US38 billion.

The figures do tend to support Mayes. Only a bunch of clowns could screw things up in these circumstances.

So, Canada's trade balance ballooned by 394%.

What did your paycheck do in the period 1995 to 2005? Hmmm?

In Ireland such circumstances have caused personal incomes to increase 88%.

Why is it that there has been no such growth in Canadian incomes?

Now, I will allow that with the stronger CDN$ you have more purchasing power...but exactly who is reaping the windfall from trade?

The Irish cut back on cradle-to-grave socialism and they cut government in general and now their people are on track to be the richest people in Europe by the end of this Fiscal Year in less than two months.

If your government will constantly stomp out your gains with regressive taxes then at some point this growth cycle will go bust instead of allowing Canada (and Canadians) to be in a position to develop these short term gains into a long term and permanent increase in both the Canadian presence in the global economy and the wallet of the average Canadian.

In short, if Canada opts to pursue socialism even more than before you will certainly snatch mediocrity or even poverty from the jaws of wealth.
I've gotta get back to work. You seem to think that our taxes go exclusivly to social programs that are hindering our economy. There was no doubt waste by the Liberal party (gun registry being the worst).

Our taxes during this time frame have gone largely to paying down debt and that job isn't over yet. If Harper runs a deficit this year, I will personally drive to parliament hill and kick him in the nuts.

I'd be curiouse to hear your thoughts on our healthcare system as it would seem Canada is getting more bang for its buck than America is. Care to refute that claim?

Having the federal government tax just to send it off again simply wastes money in the administration of the whole thing. Let the feds cut the taxes so the provinces can raise thier own and cover the whole thing directly, rather than throguh this excessive burracracy we have now. Too bad most politicians are way too self-serving to see that this is a much better model in which to base of tax system on.

Avro, I agree that there are certain areas that the federal government should be investing into. Just taxing to send it off to provinces again is a waste though.

Well the Tories just ponied up $5.5 billion over four years for a highways and border infrastructure fund and that has nothing to do with the provinces.

Psst? Highways are under provincial jurisdiction. The Feds have absolutely nothing to do with them. *hands you a book entitled 'Puffy The Train That Could'.

Avro was talking about a "highways and border infrastuctur fund", also known as the Pacific Gateway Plan.
