Canada's Judo faint hope in the upcoming Olympics, Nicholas Gill, is a frothing separatist who voted for sovereignty - yet he has been appointed flag bearer for Canada.

Will he do the dirty and pull out his fleur-de-lis?

Is this a great country or what?

Zap @ Tue Jul 20, 2004 4:41 pm

Or maybe it will soften the separatist attitude but I hope THAT'S not the purpose of choosing him for the task. I think as usually the brains behind the decision simply didn't do their homework.
Lets just hope he has class ... Maybe it will instill a bit of national pride in "some" of the separatists.

BTW ... nice board and I hope to add my 2 cents once in awhile. :)

First off, welcome Zap...... :)

Second, Karra you hypocrite, you talk about the nobble wannabe yanks in Alberta that want to seperate and how wonderful their cause is, and then you fire shots at the Quebec seperatists. Their all the same to me, traitors. If the Canadian Olympic Committee want's to give an olive branch to Quebec, so be it, not all people in Quebec want to leave Canada you know.

He can't be a hard-core separatist... where did he make those comments? seven years ago, during the referendum or recently?

Sound like a big joke… as long as he doesn’t pull his fleur de lis during the Olympics. Cause that would really suck…

He declared his separatiste conviction(s) during the referendum and pulled the canadian flag from his website which was replaced not with his own personal fleur de lis but with a real one.

Everyone just relax, and remember - most separatist separatistes are poseurs extraordinaire by gum and buy gar. . . . .

-Mario- @ Thu Jul 22, 2004 12:45 pm

If, in 95, they would had to redone the referendum just a week after they had voted; Quebec would have scored even less because Quebecois were fed up with the whole thing. The separatism movement takes a long time to get momentum in Quebec. Same story in 80. Like I said, if he is willing to carry the Canadian flag, he can't that much of a separatist.
That or he is a big hypocrite.

I hope he waves the fleur-de-lis.

If the world were a perfect place, most of you would be unhappy because you'd have NOTHING TO BITCH ABOUT!

Go ahead, wave the fleur-de-lis, see if I care.

Vancouvers-David @ Wed Aug 18, 2004 3:23 pm

I don't think seperatists should be allowed to carry the flag. But people can change after 9 years whats the big deal? Does anyone know if he is still a seperatist?

Isengard @ Fri Aug 20, 2004 8:31 am

I think that even the separatists know that Quebec is not a country in the moment. So if they want to be part of the olympics, they do it with Canada, because it's still the country in which Quebec is. So should we remove from the olympics all the people that have separatist views? From Quebec or elsewhere? Do you think that all US athletes are in love with their country?

Godz46, what's that about the funding?? If Quebec gets separated someday, athletes will get their funds from Quebec, isn't it obvious?? If I follow your thinking, if Quebec separates, we won't have any more post, because mail is managed by Canada Post, which is a federal institution? Hmmm I think that's a little too easy.

And who cares which flag he shows, he would get there with a banana in his hand and it wouldn't change a thing. Better to have separatists winners than federalists losers at the olympics.

Well I would rather have a Canadien or Canadan carring my flag.
As for winning or losing I thought it was all about the compition?

That's what I think too, I don't understand why people stop at things like that. Can't we focus on what's important?

I guess we could revert to the days of old.
There was a winner and everyone else lost
I like our system .
