Yeah, but where would a 'Wexit' get us? We'd be even less likely to get any pipelines built, and everything people were saying the ROC should do to 'get tough' with Quebec 20+ years ago-including us Albertans-would be applied just as easily too.

I'm not saying I support a Wexit, however the prevailing thought is the West would be able to determine it's own course. Whatever that is. The mindset is Ottawa cares very little for the People of Alberta and Saskatchewan, and these provinces have very little say in domestic policy. This is further supported by Ottawa's apparant war on Oil and Gas.

It's almost like the intolerable acts that led to the succession of the US, bills C-69 and C-48 are almost seen the same way as the Port Act or the Quartering Act...

Albertan's feel the Federal Government bleed's them dry, and we get nothing in return.

There is a ground swell of support for Separation, does that mean we'll separate... I don't know. But if the federal government keeps throwing matches on the tinder pile that is this issue, eventually it will light, and a coalition might just do it.

I learned how to do divisions in school, including long divisions, but I don't remember deep divisions. [huh]

I wonder what the remainder will be when the next PM calculates this division... or does he/she have to calculate fractions?

Deep divisions and fractions are like when the PM decides an Albertan is 3/5 of a Quebecer.

I feel sorry for your census takers. That is if you all take a census. USA does ever 10 years.

Our census is so Comuunistically thorough, you can be thrown in jail for
refusing to capitulate to take it.

Yes, we do a census every 4 or 5 years I think. Most people get the short form, but random people get the long form. The only time people get involved is if you don't send your form back in time. Then you get people knocking on your door.

The census isn't optional.

Last time I knocked on doors, the short form took about 5 minutes to do... the long form under 20 minutes.

If someone refused, we'd leave a note saying that he/she could be fined 500$. I usually got a phone call from them before the end of the day, or I got a notification that it had been done electronically. :D

Oh, it's worse than that.

I used that fraction as a historical nod. ;)

I can only speak for myself, it comes down to "damned if you do, damned if you don't" on Wexit or Western separation. If the Liberals form a coalition with the NDP and the Greens, odds are the TMX expansion will never see shovels in the ground as a condition of said coalition. If the west separates, the chance of any more pipelines is nil, so what is the difference in either scenario?

JaredMilne JaredMilne:
I swear by and at Pierre Trudeau in the same sentence. I've said it to some of the Franco-Quebecois I've met over the years, and I've said it to other Albertans-if I'd ever had the chance, I would have given Pierre a military salute with one hand in appreciation of all the things he did right, and a Salmon Arm salute with the other hand for all the things he fucked up.

The thing that really sets off a lot of people in Alberta is the goddamn condescension directed at us not just by the likes of Pierre Trudeau, but by some modern leftists and environmentalists who seem to portray us as either inbred hicks too stupid to know our cowboy hats from our six-shooters, or Captain Planet villains who wake up every morning twirling our Snidely Whiplash moustaches and then gather to plot about how we're going to rape the planet while eating puppies for breakfast.

Yes, you can criticize us for not saving our oil royalty money wisely-and Albertans like bootlegga and myself have done just that-, and I hate how some of us were insufferable assholes in the good times, but apparently all the money we pay into equalization and the money that workers who come from other parts of the country send back home don't count for anything. Not to mention that we've got forward-thinking companies that are actively trying to reduce their environmental impact, or that even somebody like Preston Manning is getting grief from the likes of Ezra Levant over his concerns about oil and gas development.

I hear what the people concerned about spills and the impact on hunting or fishing say, but then I hear what the people who make their livings off the oilsands are saying too. It's one of the things I'm racking my brains over trying to figure out a solution to...

...but I hate myself for not being able to.

With regards to the bolded it part, it really goes to show that Canadians are some of the nastiest, backstabbing SOBs underneath the friendly exterior, especially on the west coast or in Central Canada. Say what you want about Donald Trump, but he doesn't put in much--if any--effort into hiding his vile demeanor. Justin Trudeau and the Laurentians/West Coasters? They will smile and pretend to be your friend before they throw you under the bus for their own gain while reveling in their own hypocrisy. Their "concern" for environmentalism is really little more than a front for their malice. If Vancouverites truly gave a damn about CO2 emissions, they would stop exporting coal from the Port of Vancouver that will be burned in China. Similarly, the Quebecois have no concerns about dumping raw sewage into the St. Lawrence or letting oil tankers from Saudi Arabia sail down their just-as-vulnerable waterways. They are the worst of hypocrites and reason why I take pleasure in denigrating this country as the most hypocritical in the West.

Me and FV must have been separated at birth because I think and feel exactly the same thing. Canada is the most insincere and saccharine country on the face of the planet, so sickly-sweet and nutritionally-empty it's like chewing on artificial sugar. I don't see how anyone can believe any of the bullshit our government and our media keep pushing about how "nice" we are. It's not true. And it never was.

"The world needs more Canada", according to Bono? Only someone who doesn't live here could say something that silly with a straight face.

I don't know how many times I've tried to tell people we may seem polite, but that's because you can't yet read the subtext.

Sure, overall, we are good people. But we are really good at hiding the river of venom we have, just under the surface.

PluggyRug @ Thu Oct 17, 2019 11:40 am

...and that surface is as thin as surface tension.

I'm on another board with mostly Americans as members. I keep telling them this but they just don't want to believe it, apparently because they're so despondent about the way their own system had turned out. I empathize with them but I don't give in to their sadness by encouraging an erroneous belief that we have some sort of utopia going on north of the 49th parallel. Like I've said here before it's undeniable that Americans truly hate each other, mostly for reasons of politics/race/religion that are still kind of alien to most Canadians. That being said Canadians seem to truly relish fucking each other over based on which region we live in and what jobs we perform. And that's something that seems alien to Americans. As much as they hate each other you don't see, for example, New York deliberately trying to nuke an industry in Texas that provides jobs for hundreds of thousands of people and wealth for the entire country. In Canada this kind of horrifying pettiness is pretty much par for the course, and has been since Confederation when the new national government deliberately destroyed (just because they could) the old traditional trading patterns the Maritimes had with the northeastern American states, with the end result being the once self-sustaining Atlantic region descending into a poverty it's never since escaped from. Ottawa's, and the Liberals, non-stop war on Alberta is proof that it still goes on today, with even more fervour than ever before.

These are the things that make Canada so disingenuous. Our sanctity can't bear even the slightest bit of critical examination without kicking off a row of outrage from those who benefit from it the most. It's something that's been going on for far too long and needs to come to a definitive end sooner rather than later.

Or because the most insecure whiney fucks are the loudest.
You don't love us cuz we're from Alberta/Quebec/Ontario
You'd almost think they were a significant minority. You live in the best country on Earth, one of the wealthiest and most free.
