Yeah, saw that yesterday... it was only 1.38 in Truro, but that's hardly anything to excited about.

I tried one of these yesterday at the Zoo. I now have something in common with Bush as I wiped out when the unit shut down at least I didn't wipe out just getting on! It goes 20 kph and does not require insurance or parking. For an urban commute it might be the answer for some to the gas problem.

I don't understand the point of those segways.... why not just have three wheels and a throttle?? Seems like it'd make life, and the technology required, a whole lot simpler.

On the first day of the fall session of Parliament, the opposition parties sunk their claws into the governing Liberals by demanding action on sky-high fuel prices.

The Conservatives hit the Liberals with five questions in question period on the issue Monday, telling Prime Minister Paul Martin that Canadian drivers are fed up with the prices they're paying at the pumps and want the federal government to offer some relief.

In Canada taxes make up an average of 37 percent of the gasoline price compared to 18 per cent in the U.S.

"Rather than continue to rake in record high revenue from record-high oil prices, will the government simply cut gas taxes for consumers?" asked Conservative Party leader Stephen Harper.

"As the honourable member knows," the prime minister replied, "the majority of taxes, certainly the excise tax, does not go up when gas prices go up."

He further explained that much of the revenues from gas taxes are going to municipalities to pay for urban transit, sustainable development and new roads.

Deputy Conservative Leader Peter MacKay pointed out that those who are being hurt the most by fuel costs are seniors on fixed incomes who will need to heat their homes this winter, as well as farmers and truck drivers.

"The prime minister continues to dither on tax relief for Canadians while his government is pulling in money, hand over fist because of the increased taxes on oil and gas. When is this government going to give Canadians a tax break and stop gouging them on the high price of oil and gas?"

Finance Minister Ralph Goodale replied that "statistics show that the government does not anticipate a windfall from this situation."

He added that any extra revenue will go to "those in the greatest need" and that the government is considering its options about how to do that.

MacKay then called on the government to limit the GST revenue it collects on gasoline. But Goodale replied that any tax cuts on gasoline would likely do little for consumers.

"I wish the problem were as simple to solve as the honourable member suggests," Goodale said.

"Unfortunately, the complexity and the volatility of the market means you can see a change of five or 10 cents at the pumps in a matter of hours. A tax break of two or three cents a litre would rapidly become invisible."

Outside the Commons after the daily question period was over, reporters demanded Goodale explain what, exactly, his government was planning to do.

"Obviously we want to make sure that Canadians are treated fairly in the marketplace, and one of the techniques for doing that is improving the degree and the scope of the monitoring," the finance minister said.

When pressed for more details, Goodale said the appropriate ministers would provide them when they're ready.

"We're going through all of the administrative possibilities together with the costing issues," Goodale said describing that work as "advancing."

"This is detailed work that requires careful attention because we want to have the strongest system possible. In the meantime, it is encouraging to see that at least some of the spike has been coming off in the market and that prices have moderated at least to a certain extent."

This is hilarious listening to you people believing you deserve lower gas prices, that you should have a say in gas prices, that you or any government or political party can do a damn thing about it, lol

YOU ARE LOWLY PEASANT PEOPLE! to our "oil overlords" we don't even register as human beings! as soon as the people who are really in control (not the government) who have the real wealth, no longer need our meager pennies, and we are no longer any use to them, they will simply exterminate us all with a global pandemic. You people think to much of yourselves. ;)

Cut the gas tax and the oil companies will take the difference as soon as possible, you want to give gas companies more of your money? or keep it in government where it can be used on programs like health care. Otherwise the gov will have to get the money from somewhere else, more GST anyone?

Peak Oil is coming soon and we're all doomed! ;)

One problem is that there are millions of people in large urban centres sucking up all the gas, when they should be on transit. Increasing oil demand, and price. Need to expand the TTC Subway for starters.

And if you think the gov should put a price cap on gas,, Oil companies will sell to the highest bidder, like CHINA. You have become an irrelevant and insignificant customer thanks to China. So with a cap, gas will be cheap, but you'll only get a few liters a month. lol

---

Yesterday, the opposition parties asking about gas prices in the house of commons was pathetic and embarrassing. If the opposition knew anything about how the global economy works, they'd know it's an issue the government can do absolutely nothing about. I'm sure they probably do know, they just want to exploit the issue for political gain. They know everything I've said above is true.

IceOwl IceOwl:
We aren't paying enough for gasoline. In some parts of Europe, they're paying as much as $5/L!

Who cares what they pay in Europe its there problem. Care what you spend in your own back yard.

DanishViking @ Tue Sep 27, 2005 12:39 pm

Sorry but the price is only about 1,40 euro/L (1,90 CAD/L) on average in Denmark! (and sadly we are among the front runners :( )
