need to see the Liberals is that it is obvious that it is the Liberals who are producing all the hot air which is affecting the climate.

So true.

Frankly, the Kyoto protocol is going to cost millions, perhaps billions, to the Canadian economy. To what end? China, Russia and India will continue to pump billions of tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere, beggaring Canada's contribution.

I'd rather take those millions or billions of dollars and put them toward adapting to climate change. The opportunity to prevent is gone; actually it was probably never there. Considering the state the world is in today, it might be a bit much to expect everyone to get along to try to control global warming. Goodbye polar bear hello pine beetle. Frankly, I quite liked polar bears, but let's face it -- their days are numbered.

Climate change is here, it's happening, and it's going to start happening faster. Don't be surprised, for example, if we don't get much of a winter for our Olympics in 2010. We need to figure out what the impacts are going to be and -- just as important -- what the potential benefits are going to be. Change is opportunity.

We in Canada will be fairly insulated due to our wealth. Climate change is goign to hit poor countries that do not have the resources to insulate themselves from massive climatic change. It will be like a muliplier for Africa's already duanting challenges. Too bad for them. It sucks.

If you think Canada is insulated, think again. We have resources...for now. What happens as global sea levels rise ? The Hudson Bay Basin will begin to flood. Slowly the sea will extend down to the prairies wiping out "the bread basket". This is a problem that will affect everyone, not just Canada. You must remember Russia and China are not landlocked. Sea levels will rise there as well.

A growing population added with a dwindling food & water supply does not have the probabiltity of having many benefits. The competiton of resources will become more intense. Wars will become more frequent.

Any attempt, no matter how imperfect, to start a dialogue with the world is in all of our best interests. We can argue, or we can attempt real change. We must starting putting the planet's interest ahead of our own. We must put our survival ahead of making a quick buck or saving a little bit of cash. Afterall, if we kill this planet, money won't do us much good.

Another thread with a new twist on the Kyoto accord:

is that global warming is a natural thing. If we were headed into an ice age some fool would be hollering that it was the farmers' fault too. Besides, I'm kind of in favour of a warmer climate for the rest of my life anyhow.

I'm going to invest everything in sunblock manufacturing companies and move to high ground. 8)

In the 70's, the same people were running around saying that the earth was cooling and that we were all going to be run down by advancing glaciers and frozen in an ice age.

that we were told not to eat turned out to be not so bad after all.

Like paint chips, fig?

Wow... apathy is in! Let's all kick back on our lawn chairs, have a beer and watch the world die.

Avro Avro:
China has signed on and ratified it but I have no confidense that it will be implemented by the Chinese government especially as they're market begins to open up and grow.

It was easy for China to sign it - they are not subject to any of the restrictions laid out in it.

Zenfisher @ Fri Sep 24, 2004 11:09 pm

Russia is looking to ratify it now. As I have said Kyoto is a starting point. It needs work, yes. We have to do something.A journey begins with a single step.

You think we have seventy five years Avro. That is wishful thinking. In today's paper, there is a story about the unexpected speed of the melting of Antartica. Oil is the least of our worries. I'll seee if I can find a link.
