Media's hot air on Kyoto

As a Kyoto supporter, perhaps you can explain how the world benefits when countries like China, India, and the Arab Emirates are unaffected by this treaties. China already leads the world in pollution and when they build 500 more coal powered generators, the problem will be much worst.
Actually, I'm not an outright Kyoto supporter at all. It is shallow, misguided and weak. But it's all we've got for now, and I did not appreciate the US manipulation and weakening of the treaty, only to pull out anyway. Kyoto needs to be built upon, rather than used as an excuse for inaction.
ridenrain ridenrain:
We should be slapping tariffs on their products until they stop polluting, instead of sending them money in the form of carbon taxes.
I agree. The US (under Clinton) were the ones who pushed carbon trading as the principle mechanism, instead of real emissions reductions. Then they scuppered the process by refusing to sign it anyway. Assholes. I would like to see trade restrictions that place environmental limits on trade in much of the crap that comes out of China. But the WTO is unlikely to let that happen any time soon. Assholes.
ridenrain ridenrain:
As for the CBC. They are not doing their job. FOX, CNN, BCC provide competition and proof that the CBC has become stale.
Yep, they could certainly do a better job. But you won't find me criticising it for being too liberal - just the opposite. I still find CBC rather conservative, but then I mostly work in Europe and Africa, and North American perspectives are usually more conservative in comparison. (You guys mostly seem pretty nuts from where I'm typing.)

I still think CBC needs to be there, regardless of any perceived political bias for the moment. What goes around comes around, and we'll be glad of it for decades to come. We'd end up regretting having ditched it in the current frenzy for privatisation.

MissT if only a small minority watch the CBC how is that protecting anything? Not many people care about it and if they do many don't even watch it themselves. Other private networks produce Canadian programmes and television films that are more popular and better than what the CBC produces. Canadians love foreign programmes as well that is why we watch them all. Especially American programmes but that can be said about most of the world too. There is a joke about that actually.
Americans: Spend most of their lives glued to the idiot box.
Canadians: Don't, but only because they can't get more American channels.
Brits: Pay a tax just so they can watch four channels.
Australians: Export all their crappy programs, which no-one there watches, to Britain, where everybody loves them.
Maybe, but I don't think this is a reason to ditch a national public service institution. Hey, here's a radical idea... improve it instead!

Let me guess...Give them more money?
What they need is a huge laxative to clear out all that old shit.

Not a bad idea but how do you improve it though? What would improving it be getting more ratings? Then you have to look at what exactly do Canadians watch on television. I don't watch a lot on there except maybe cpac or a film if it is on. What do you watch on television or do you watch any? What does everyone watch on television?

As a Kyoto detractor, perhaps you can explain how the world benefits when countries like Canada do nothing? I have not been able to get an insight into if you are a "CO2 does not cause global warming" or an "everyone else is doing it so we should too" Conservative!
As for the CBC, why does competition from FOX, CNN and BCC (Do you mean BBC here?) make the CBC invalid? A Canadian perspective on the news is still important, even if we have access to news from around the world. Other CBC programming, well, the showing Canada to Canadians part is falling short and I would like to see it fixed. CBC childerns programs, well, I love to watch Kids programs during which my granddaughter does not constantly say "I want that" during ads. Other programs are just for fun, if you don't like them, just turn to another channel, its a 500 channel universe out there!
News and Childerns programs (Kids CBC) alone make the CBC a valid part of the T.V. available. By the way, where I live up north, when I am not in the city, the CBC is the only game in town.

It is not the business or the duty of Canada to benefit the world in general. We are simply not big or powerful enough to save the world all by ourselves, especially when they chose to build 500 more coal power plants.
We need to clean our own lands country but we should not pay others to clean up their own countries.

I am not sure if any news outlet gets a majority of people viewing. Fox claims to be the most watched news outlet in the U.S. (and yes, I do watch it when I am down there, mostly for a laugh and sometimes when "Night of the Living dead" is not available for viewing) and I don't think they get anywhere near 50% of the viewing public.
About Canadians not watching T.V. because they can't get more American channels, I say, that sounds like a good idea. It seems to me that the less T.V. any one watches the better. Read a good novel, listen to the radio, go for a walk, whatever. They don't call it the idiot box for nothing. And that is not a swipe at entertainment, its news, weather, sports and everything about it.

No one expects Canada to "save the world", just do its fair share. And I agree with MissT, Kyoto is not the best, but it is something and we should try to live up to our responsibilities here.

2006: At 10th Anniversary, Fox News Makes Changes To Stay On Top
MissT @ Thu Jan 04, 2007 2:54 am
Hwacker, don't you find it slightly, well... embarassing, to admit that you watch Fox News? Have you still not spotted that it provides the lowest common denominator of "news" in North America? The way it simplifies and overstates the world is like watching a black and white set when the rest of the world is watching colour TV. Or perhaps it's more like watching a cartoon instead of a movie. News of the Baddie/Goodie BOIIINNG! SPLAT! variety. Well, whatever. To each, his own.
hwacker hwacker:

I guess it depends on how you define majority. I use the definition of 50% + 1 and find it very hard to believe that anywhere near 50% of americans watch fox.

I guess as embarassing to admit support for the Liberals or the NDP.
And ask me if I give a shit what you think, c'mon I dare you.
