What is your opinion on the government creating a redlight district? Getting prostitutes off of street corners, putting in one area in a building. Eliminates pimps, it would be controlled. Having prostitutes pay taxes, legalizing pot, taxing that. These things are not gonna go away, so why not?

I think you're on the right track...is there enough room on this bus for Ottawa to jump on board? Just think of the revenue this would generate!!! Heck, Niagara Falls become the new Fort MacMurray!

Again with hypocrisy. In one thread you express dismay with prostitution and in the next you endorse it. Legalizing any activity allows it to be organized, for profit and thus markets expanded and the activity by default is legitimized and loses much of its stigma. Why do you believe the government can somehow control the negative effects through regulation and taxation? Historically, they have failed with tobacco and alcohol glaring examples.

If you can remember, what I said is teenage girls hooking to survive, not adults. By the way, I am against it but its the longest profession going. Its not gonna stop. At least the girls are safe, not being killed or beaten. They are contained so when you drive down the street in big cities they are not at every street corner.

Instead we'll pay for arresting them, taking them to court, investigations for missing persons. Medical for when they're beaten or raped. Jail...should I go on? Nothing is perfect but its a start.

It's not the worst idea. The health benefits alone make it a good idea. With regulation and monitoring, STD rates can go way down.

Which negative effects are you thinking will still be around after it becomes regulated?

It doesn't matter how hard they try to make it go away, its never gonna go away. Maybe its time to sit down and see what would could be done to protect both sides of the trade.

I don't know about the rest of the country, but Edmonton essentially has legalized prostitution, just not red light districts.

Our fair city has dozens of 'massage' parlours where pretty much anything goes for the right price. The police do not raid the establishments, knowing full well what happens there, but bylaw officers check to make sure everyone has an 'escort permit' ($1500 I think) from the city and overall cleanliness of the facility.

Personally, if it keeps the girls off the street and protects them from predators, then I'm of the opinion that we might as well legalize it (strictly regulated though), as it's impossible to kill off the world's oldest profession.

It's the same largely in Vancouver. The cops don't bust prostitues anymore, they only check if they're legal age or not.

Why not? Why should all the whores in Parliament have a monopoly?

it can work, look at amsterdam and patpong in thailand.

We really need to take a hard look at Amsterdam to see ho this can be done right. Not only Amsterdam but also Germany, and any other European countries that have this sort of initiative.

There are definite benefits to the legalization of prostitution and the implementation of Red Light districts. The obvious would be a safer environment for the women to work in. Increased revenue for both municipality, provincial and federal governments thru taxes. Safer for the "Johns". Healthier, as the women can be screened more easily for STDs.

Also the government could implement licensing. I believe that Windsor, ON already does this with its escorts. Each one is licensed. With that you could revoke said license if the women fails an STD test, and then they could not be hired by a brothel.

Are North American society is way to up tight about certain things. I think we really need to just take a step back and relax a little.

Honestly this ‘problem’ is not going to go away. It’s been around for centuries and is just not going to disappear because it is illegal. I know it’s not a perfect solution but something really needs to be done. I don’t honestly see what the big deal with the legalization and regulation of prostitution is.
