Hi Everyone,

For some time now I have been thinking about moving
to canada after I graduate from college. I allready
have relatives in Quebec and Ontario but I have only
been to Canada a few times, and even then to New Brunswick
and Nova Scotia only.

Even though I do value money, in which I think jobs
based in the US offer more, I also value freedom and
a society that is liberal, clean, and not obsessed with
terorism like the US is. I cant stand it lately that not
a day goes by without Bush on TV or news of more
people dead.

Does anyone in Canada fear that if the conservatives
do win the election there would be a buildup of the
military there too, and many civil liberties you have
would be lost? I hate to think that Canada would lose
its appeal when I finnally get there. Please Tell me
what you think about this, and also perhaps your
favorite thing about Canada so I may hash it over and
decide whether to move or not. Thanks. 8)

It says that you live in Hawaii. Why would you want to leave there? If you come here maybe Victoria would be the place. I just moved here from Ottawa and the weather is nice. We have palm trees here which is unique to Canada. The Conservative didn't get in but that doesn't mean Paul Martin wont go along with Bush's missile defence plan. Because you know it just rains missiles down here. We need a plan to stop it. Realy, I think our government is just going to drag our heels until Bush is gone. As far as freedom, we in Canada can bitch about our government and not be labeled anti Canadian.
Anyway, the grass is always greener on the other side. Visiting a place is alot different then moving there. Canadian winters are cold and long. Canadians bitch all the time about Americans (which I think is unfair, they should bitch about the government, not the people). Alot of Americans here just bite there tongue. I love Canada and would never live in another country. I think it's up to job oportunities and lifestyle that makes someone want to move. Bush will be gone sone. Life in the States will get better. If you dont like hearing his stupid speeches, turn it off.

I think you should move to Winnipeg, Chowda. Beautiful city. It gets a little cold in the winter, but the stores carry the proper attire to overcome that.

I've been to Winnipeg. Twice. That means after visiting it I wanted to come back. It's a beautiful city in the summer. It's very flat. The saying goes you can watch your dog run away for days. It has the windiest corner in Canada. The folk festival is awsome. And of course, being Canada, there's malls. Louis Reil's grave is there. I think Winnipeg sometimes gets an unfair rap. Some say it's a good place to be from. BTO and the Guess Who are from there.

Rev_Blair @ Sat Jul 03, 2004 10:57 pm

And so am I.

Which Folk Festival did you make, Gonzo? I haven't been to a bad one yet, but my favourite remains the first time Mojo Nixon was there. He took things that little extra step and whoever had the balls to book him carried that throught the whole show. It seeped into the campground, and it it infected a lot of us.

I was there in 02. I cant remember much of the events. I wont say why, other then Manitoba bud rivals BC bud. Not only is Winnipeg great, it's also tragic. I miss the Jets.

I know many of you reminded me of the cold cold winters in Canada, but thats fine with me I'm a bit of a winter freak. I grew up in Massachusetts which is pretty cold itself.

I kinda like the idea of the Praries only due to the abundance of lakes there. Nothing is better than a nice home on a lake. But doesn't the praries have a low lower standard of living? I also love malls and good restaurants which are a bit less frequent there huh?

Oh...and yes I do live in Hawaii right now, but that being said Hawaii is not all its cracked up to be. I mean it rains alot here, and the houses are crapy and go for a fortune. Living here for 5 years now is enough for me. I think the only thing I will miss is the food and perhaps asian influence of the place.

Right now I am looking into Ottawa alot and really like Quebec City but I dont speak french :(

The praries dont have a low standard of living. Plus a lower standard of living in Canada is not bad to a low standard of living elseware. We realy do live like kings compared to the rest of the world. Canadians are spoiled which is why we whine so much. There are alot of natives in Winnipeg who have realy been screwed by the government since european settlers. Alot of them dont even have a chance. A huge number of natives are born into poverty. The reserves they live in are terrible. Some are considered third world condetions which, if you read a statistic on Winnipeg, would bring the average standard of living down. The treatment of natives in this country is terrible, which should be another post.
Having said all that, the praries are beautiful. Lots of lakes and rivers. It has a low population compared to the rest of Canada. Ontario is just packed, BC is where people move to. Victoria is for the newly wed and nearly dead. Maybe I'll move to the praries too.

Rev_Blair @ Sun Jul 04, 2004 11:26 am

The standard of living isn't low here at all. Our housing is still affordable. We have more restaurants per capita than any other city in North America. We have shopping malls (too many I'd say) that have all the same stores and services you'd find in a mall in any other city.

What civil liberties has the "War on Terror" cost you ChowdaBoy? Is the government personally invading your privacy? Is our country really that dirty? Have you ever been to Asia. (Wow! That place is dirty) If so, how? Don't generalize, be specific. If that's the case, contact you local Rep. or Congressman... Otherwise quit whining and just move! That's the problem with most Liberals... All talk, no action. Stay in college until you understand how a democracy works, then help make it work, rather than fleeing. Voting is the key, but not just for a president. It starts on the Local/State level. Don't they teach "critical thinking" in college anymore? I shouldn't even be telling you all of this... IT"S COMMON SENSE!

GerryHurt @ Mon Jul 12, 2004 12:06 pm

$1:
I shouldn't even be telling you all of this... IT"S COMMON SENSE!

That's rich, coming from an atypical american who wouldn't know what "common sense" was if it bit him/her on the ass.

BigDubUSA @ Mon Jul 12, 2004 12:29 pm

Lets see...
I'm not a typical American (but in most of these threads, Americans are typical)
And, I don't know what common sense is?? I'm having trouble just making sense of what you said... If it doesn't make sense then it must be right. We Americans are so awful and make no sense at all! C'mon hoser! Stimulate me with intelligence. Not pathetic remarks because you're mad! Be articulate and pithy.

GWN_Ronnie @ Mon Jul 12, 2004 12:37 pm

Don't be messing up someones topic with this bull
if you don't have anythig to say about the topic at hand move along, we don't need every thred in here to become american vs. Canadian bullshit

BigDubUSA @ Mon Jul 12, 2004 1:16 pm

ronnie, ronnie, ronnie...
SUCK IT UP ronnie or get offline!

Rev_Blair @ Mon Jul 12, 2004 5:10 pm

This thread isn't yours to mess around with, Little Dud. It was started by somebody who has an honest interest in Canada. Now leave it alone.
