How is the news coverage for this news in the ROC?
Tman1 @ Fri Mar 17, 2006 10:56 pm
I'd comment on that but unfortunately I can't read french.
Elvis @ Fri Mar 17, 2006 10:59 pm
well I cant find anything in the english media!
Tman1 @ Fri Mar 17, 2006 11:00 pm
Why did you post in english then? How is the ROC supposed to know?
Elvis @ Fri Mar 17, 2006 11:07 pm
Because i wonder if anyone else could find something in the english media concerning this news story.
You know sometime censorship is not about what is said but more about what is news and what is not news. The fact the the CPC just cancel this Important program
could be seen has a way for Harper to apease the Bloc before parlement open.

As always elvis (an english moniker) you take great pleasure in even the smallest possible dissent between CDN provinces.
Most of whatyou believe is racist and derogatory amd will be defeated because you are wrong. Bonne chance, mes ami.

Well, I am curious as to what his linky says. I might be able to comment and give wisdom where needed if translation is in place.

There was a Canadian unity council? High profile organization was it?
The Canadian Unity Council story was the first segment on Politics yesterday. The Liberals sent a representative to talk about it, but Don Neuman explained the Conservatives didn't send anybdy although Harper's office had been contacted. Near the end of the show the Conservatives sent somebody over to make a statement outside, but no questions were answered.

Tories axe unity council funding
Liberals slam decision on `important' group Federalist organization
was founded in 1964

SEAN GORDON
OTTAWA BUREAU
OTTAWA—The Conservative government is cutting off funding for the Canadian Unity Council, one of the most venerable Quebec-based federalist organizations, as part of a broader review of the way Ottawa promotes the federation.
The council has been at the forefront of the national unity wars since its founding in 1964, but Heritage Minister Bev Oda has served notice that it will no longer be able to count on the roughly $12.9 million it receives each year in federal funding.
"I guess that's it. We get about 80 per cent of our funding from Heritage Canada," said Peter Cowan, the unity council's spokesman.
Cowan said it will be nearly impossible for the council to survive without federal funding, but added there is hope some programs will continue under different auspices.
Oda said in an interview the council has done good work in the past, but the government is looking at new ways to promote the merits of federalism.
"Our government wants to fundamentally change the way the federal government interacts with the provinces," said Oda, who hopes to present to cabinet this fall a new plan for promoting federalism. She said there are no plans to revisit funding for other federalist groups, but that budgets will be evaluated case by case.
Transport Minister Lawrence Cannon, one of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's key Quebec lieutenants, said the Tories simply want to revisit the methods used by past governments to make the case for federalism.
"(The council) are a talented group of people who have done a lot of great things. We just think that after 42 years we have to take a look at it, rejuvenate some of the programs that are there, and rejig them to meet the realities of today," Cannon said in an interview.
The official opposition immediately attacked the move. Liberal MP Mauril Bélanger (Ottawa-Vanier) said the council is "an important, useful organization" and that it should be up to Parliament to determine whether the funding should continue. He added: "Only the Bloc (Québécois) will be happy about this decision."
Ottawa will immediately cut the $4.2 million annual grant to the council's Centre for Research and Information on Canada — the centre's fiscal year ends on March 31 — and funding for the council's student exchange and summer work programs will dry up this fall, a council official said.
Funding for a national program that brings students from across the country to Ottawa for one-week stints (which benefits 3,000 youths a year), and a separate summer work exchange will continue until later this year, Cowan said.
The government has indicated it is willing to look at continuing those programs in modified form.
The news came as an unpleasant surprise to the organization's 53 permanent staff, most of whom will be out of work by Labour Day.
Oda phoned the council's chairman on Thursday to deliver the bad news, and regional cabinet ministers each phoned members of the body's board of governors to explain the decision.
A past incarnation of the council was recently in the news, with reports concerning a secretive group called Option Canada that was founded out of the council budget during the 1995 referendum on sovereignty.
Earlier this year, the RCMP was called in to probe a $300,000 Option Canada grant — the organization was established by a former president of the council who once advised former prime minister Paul Martin — and Quebec's chief electoral officer is looking at whether the group violated provincial laws by making under-the-table payments to "No" side organizers.

Good riddance! An organization that is funnelled millions of dollars to try and convince Quebecers to stay in Canada. I say if Quebecers don't recognize the benefits of being part of Canada, both culturally and financially, then so long! Millions of taxpayer dollars to appease some whiners (not all Quebecers are whiners, just the separtist fucks) who only stay because of the millions of dollars! For over 40 years this organization has been around and there are still talks of separation from the Bloc, PQ and other losers.
It's obvious that these people who wish to separate are using the spectre of separation to extort more and more money from the rest of Canada! Enough is enough, the waste needs to end. It is up to the responsible, clear thinking people of Quebec to rid their province of these fucking leeches, PQ and the Bloc, who are doing more harm than good for their province.
Just an open question to the Bloc MP's, "If Quebec eventually separates from Canada will you return any pension monies that you may recieve from Canada?" I sent that question to every Bloc MP after the last election, still no answer.

Because they come up with the idea in a redneck bar in Calgary between midnight and last call but only the crazy ones think it's atill a good idea in the morning.

But this move will be not have a major effect on Canada but it is good that the new government is looking at ways to do thjings better and cut costs. It looks like they will be the government to bring dual marketing for wheat. Hey Elvis what is the concensus in Quebec on the federal governemtn spending money on a program which only benefits western farmers?
