As was expected, Senate voted in favor of scrapping the registry. What does this mean to you? For me, nada. I never believed in it so I didn't kow-tow to it.

For a couple NDP Mps, it means that they're going to get 'sent to the corner' for a while.

With the Conservatives having a majority it was going to get scrapped sooner or later. No shock that it's been done.

The people we need to be most concerned about possessing guns will still obtain and possess them, registry or not.

I guess we'll see in due time if it makes a difference.

I don't think the Liberals seriously believed that it would do anything more than make life more difficult for gun owners.

However, it played well to the gun control crowd they were pandering to.

That's all it was intended to do: make lawful gun owners accountable for where their weapons are. It amazes me how most people who are against the registry have zero understanding about why it was created.

Disarming the Canadian public is part of the new humanitarian social agenda.

Liberal Senator Sharon Carstairs Liberal Senator Sharon Carstairs:
C-68 has little to do with gun control or crime control, but it is the first step necessary to begin the social re-engineering of Canada.

Justice Minister Allan Rock Justice Minister Allan Rock:
I came to Ottawa... with the firm belief that the only people in this country who should have guns are police officers and soldiers.

Don't tell me I don't understand.

I don't have to. You're demonstrating that all on your own.

When I want to know which way the economic wind is going to blow, I'll take your word as gospel.

On gun control, not so much.

Lemmy @ Thu Feb 16, 2012 2:17 pm

Why not? I'm a hunter and a gun-owner.

The registry was created was to prevent people with gun licenses from selling or lending a gun to someone without a license. It was never intended to be a tool for police. It was meant to make licenced gun owners accountable for the guns they own. That's it. Nothing more.

But that's not what it was being sold as and what they were touting it was being used for.

For supporters, it was a great crime prevention tool.

Before the registry, did you not have to register your firearms anyways?

No. Long guns did not have to be registered. Handguns have had to be registered since the 1930s.

And it never prevented a crime in it's existence.

So I could go into a Canadian Tire, show I'm legal age, buy a rifle and walk out without completing any paperwork?

No. You have to (still) have a license to purchase a gun. But otherwise, yes. Show your license, buy the rifle or handgun, walk out.

Every weekend when I go to Cabelas or similar store I see a line up, you have to take a number and wait, to purchase firearms. It looks like a bar during happy hour. It's a beautiful sight.
