$1:
Conservative MP starts defence fund for former cops

A Saskatchewan Conservative MP has started a legal defence fund for two former Saskatoon cops convicted of unlawfully confining a native man.

Maurice Vellacott says about $1,600 has been donated to the fund set up to help clear the names of Ken Munson and Dan Hatchen.

Vellacott says the two were following Darrell Night's request to be dropped off some distance from home on a winter's night in 2001.

Don Worme, Night's lawyer, suggested the money should instead go toward compensating his client for the trauma he endured after being left on the outskirts of the city in freezing temperatures. (Canada.com - Starphoenix)

So these guys picked up an Indian guy, drove him to the outskirts of town and dropped him off to walk home. The temperature was -22 degrees Celsius.

Night was lucky to survive, 3 other guys dropped off by the cops on the outskirts of town were not so lucky.

These bastards got a few months in jail for unlawful confinement, they should have been charged with attempted murder.

This fucking idiot Vellacott seems to believe its OK to drop Indians off on the outskirts of town. I have no doubt Mr. Night preferred to be dropped of then be booked and thrown in jail...but drop the fucking guy off somewhere he can get home or at least to safety without freezing to death.

And these other guys freeze to death...so what are we saying, its ok for the police who are supposed to be protecting us to murder our people? No one has been charged but there is no question that these guys were driven out there by the police.

I don't see our elected leader doing anything to find out who killed these guys...but he can try to raise money for the pigs who tried to kill one of our people. This makes me fucking sick.

I'm sorry about the language...but as you can tell, I'm frustrated.

Send a letter to Harper telling him as a Canadian, you disagree with our elected leaders setting up defence funds for convicted criminals and murderers.

Thanks.

That whole Saskatoon story is pretty sick. Do you have a link to the article?

The Twit MP was almost our government, think about it. These are the types that are members of the Alliance party. Lets not confuse the names either, Alliance party. One night in one of our larger cities, I'm not going to name it cause it's only my word that this happened and I'm sure not all the cops in this city were involved, I was walking home from a nightclub rather late I might add when I saw the Police doing something unbelievable. As in all our magor cities there are street people, living under bridges, our in a back alley, or by creeks. The police were throwing these street people in the creek, if they got out ,they got out, if they didn't, they didn't. I was rather young and I actually feared for my life, the only time i have I might add. As all police are not white knights, they are also not all scum. But with any power comes people who want to abuse it or want it to satisfy sick desires. These people are everywhere, police, politics, what ever. Just don't hate all cops as scum bags, but don't believe they are the all good either. That goes for politicians to.

That is brutal, I didn't hear about that at all. It's a shame anyone should be a target of that bull shit! that bit about raising money just makes it that much worse...they should all go to jail for life and get ass blasted by some guy named BUBBA

Ralph @ Fri Aug 27, 2004 10:32 am

I say let the poor cops out of jail clear there record and give them their jobs back.

But first they both have to stand outside for two hours in -25, then walk the same distance that they made the outer guy walk.

Oh yes no snow suits, just jeans and a jacket.

After all that they can take a sensitive course and work with native people exclusively.

figfarmer @ Fri Aug 27, 2004 10:58 am

Where is the link to the original story? This is like a kids schoolyard, "He said." "She said." story that rouses the rabble but doesn't have anything to it. Maybe the cops dropped someone off at the edge of town. Maybe he said that is what he wanted. I dunno. I ain't gonna bitch about something I don't know all the facts on.

I'm all for First Peoples right, but what right was violated here? Drunks can be stupid. I saw a guy that had hired my folks to give him a lift try to fight with my dad because we had arrived where he wanted to go and then didn't want to leave the car. I have driven people 20 miles on their request only to have them tell me they changed their minds and want to go somewhere else. Any frozen night you see drunks improperly dressed wandering about Belleville.

Posting this kind of bullshit doesn't do anyone any good. Push people's buttons about questionable poor mistreated minorities being preyed upon by not convicted so called nasty goons somewhere else.

Ralph @ Fri Aug 27, 2004 11:24 am

There is no way the police could argue this one.

IF there was liquor involved and I do stress IF.
Then it is more reason that the officers either take the man into custody or drive him home.
It was very cold the man was not in any state to make a good decision as to what was in his best interest .

Alcohol and cold do not (contrary to popular belief) mix.
Drinking will hasten hyperthermia, not warm you up.
These police officers have heard of, if not seen first hand the results of hyperthermia and alcohol and should have acted to protect this mans life.

If these were average citizens who were just doing what they thought was right, I can see your point. But these are POLICE OFFICERS who have sworn to SERVE and PROTECT all of Canada's citizens, not just sober white people.

This is not questionable conduct, this is plain and simple criminal activity. Just because the guy may have been a drunk native does not justify these actions at all.

We had an inquiry into the death of Neil Stonechild and we know there was police involvement and we know some of those cops covered up what their murderous colleagues did. This is not half cocked, enough is enough. When these pigs lie and murder and break the law lets stop letting them off the hook just because they are cops and lets put their asses in jail where they belong.

You think I don't get a little anxous when the police pull me over or follow me or show up at whatever pub I'm at? Why should my people have to feel scared or afraid of the police? I'll tell you way, because they do shit like this. And the guys who murdered those men are still on the force.

Robair @ Fri Aug 27, 2004 12:54 pm

Hey fig, you haven't a clue on this particular topic so why jump in like that?

I still lived in SK when this went down and those cops got off WAY too easy.

Rev_Blair @ Fri Aug 27, 2004 3:48 pm

I've been following this shit for a while now. First of all, it isn't exactly a well-kept secret that police in Saskatoon (and Regina, and Winnipeg) have a very real problem with prejudice against natives. It's also no secret that police in some places, not just Saskatoon, have been known to drop natives off out in the middle of nowhere as a result. The only real mystery here is how the Regina City Police have managed not to caught.

You want to do an experiment, Fig? Become friendly with some cops from any of the three cities I named, feed them a little beer (it really doesn't take much...sometimes none at all) and see how long it takes for them to utter the phrase, "Fucking Indian," or something equally stupid and telling.

I'm not surprised that a Reform/Alliance/Conservative MP is doing his best to protect cops who use their power to act on their prejudices. I've been watching these guys in action since the party was just a twinkle in the eyes of Ted Byfield and Preston Manning. I have a scar under my eye (and likely a few on my soul) that resulted from one of my friends protesting against the brutally stupid racism expressed at one of their early meetings.

figfarmer @ Fri Aug 27, 2004 8:55 pm

I said I didn't know the full story and my whole point was that someone shouldn't just put up one part of one side of a story like that. It's easy to day, "Germans eat babies." or "People with elongated earlobes are the most likely suspects in an axe murder case." or "Police leave natives along side the road to freeze and this politician thinks it is a good idea.", but if you can't say they have been convicted of that you are just rumourmongering and that is wrong. I asked for a link to a story that shows this to be true, but don't see it yet. That politician has a case for defamation of character here. The only charge mentioned is unlawful confinement.

Rev_Blair @ Fri Aug 27, 2004 9:44 pm

Hmmm...look up the J.J. Harper thing in Winnipeg and what came out of that. Pay attention to the Neil Stonechild case. Talk to any number of our aboriginal people.

Don't take my word for it, don't listen to rumours, go check it out for yourself, Fig. Go make friends with a native or two. Experience what it's like to get pulled over for DWI (Driving While Indian). Maybe date a girl who to be a little aboriginal and listen to some cocksucker in a uniform call her "squaw" on the side of the highway for NO reason.

Go find the original story yourself, Fig. I know CBC covered it. Pretty sure that it'll in the Asper's archives somplace too. More impotantly, forget about the media...you can learn the truth very easily. All it takes is to go live it.

figfarmer @ Sat Aug 28, 2004 6:32 am

I am friends with a lot of natives. I go to the Pow Wow every year and can show you lovely pictures if you like. I know about the thing at Ipperwash and think it is disgusting, but what you seem to think is normal day to day stuff in your 'hood is thirty years or more in the past here. To anyone in the Quinte area the issue is as dead as the Spanish Inquisition.

Amnesty International - Frozen Dead Indians

You know, I don't have a problem with this guy looking out for his KKK buddies, as long as he spent the same amount of time and energy looking for the guys who killed these Indians.

Its fucking sick, they got a slap on the wrist for this shit and by god its going to stop. If these fukkers get away with this, its not going to be good for ANYONE in this province or country.

And I got to explain to my kids why why killing an Indian is not as bad as killing a white man.

Those kunts should have been fried and left to rot for violating the trust of our people, yet our elected leaders step in and try to save them?

SICK!
