What does it take to become a nation?
What if I'm tired of being a Canadian? How many people does it take to form a nation? Wouldn't it be great to have my own CPP and EI fund.
Equalization payments rub me wrong. I don't mind sharing the wealth, but why do I have to pay for the decisions of others? Why do I have to pay for BC and Quebecs choice to be more left wing that Alberta? If they hadn't made so many retarded left wing decisions, they wouldn't be in the predicament that they are in. and hiow is fair that I need to pay?
Go take over Sealand.
I own my own property, why cant I make that my country?
A nation can be synonymous with a state (in political science lexicon a nation-state is used but it can be fraught with linguistic perils) but there is a difference. Nations are products of European history. Nations are conceptually different from states in that the former is an identity shared by a large number of people based largely (but not exclusively) on objective factors such as common race, language, customs and government. The latter is defined by a joint presence of 3 factors: population, territory and sovereignty. The state, as opposed to the nation, exists when a sovereign power effectively rules over a population residing within the boundaries of a fixed nation.
See Flanagan for more as his dissection of the issue, especially in a Canadian context, is significant in political science circles.
Put a fence around your house and create your own flag. Its very easy. The down part would be that Canada wouldn't recognize you as a nation.
WTF? is there an echo in here?
A nation is a historically constituted, stable community of people, formed on the basis of a common language, territory, economic life, and psychological make-up manifested in a common culture.
i.e. Britain, Austria, Denmark, China, Luxembourg.
Africa's not a nation. It's a continent. So is Asia.
Also, Devon isn't a nation.
