What does it take to become a nation?

What if I'm tired of being a Canadian? How many people does it take to form a nation? Wouldn't it be great to have my own CPP and EI fund.

Equalization payments rub me wrong. I don't mind sharing the wealth, but why do I have to pay for the decisions of others? Why do I have to pay for BC and Quebecs choice to be more left wing that Alberta? If they hadn't made so many retarded left wing decisions, they wouldn't be in the predicament that they are in. and hiow is fair that I need to pay?

You could try. If you created some distinct area but I think you would need a few people to get together. Plus you would be to be recognised as such if you want to have diplomatic contact with Canada or even be able to set foot outside your house ermm "country". You could do what is in western Australia or like sealand if you really want to or create some type of Amish community. I bet if you went to the arctic you could claim some land or territory like Hans Island or something and live there or just go on some crown land and set up base.

A nation can be synonymous with a state (in political science lexicon a nation-state is used but it can be fraught with linguistic perils) but there is a difference. Nations are products of European history. Nations are conceptually different from states in that the former is an identity shared by a large number of people based largely (but not exclusively) on objective factors such as common race, language, customs and government. The latter is defined by a joint presence of 3 factors: population, territory and sovereignty. The state, as opposed to the nation, exists when a sovereign power effectively rules over a population residing within the boundaries of a fixed nation.

See Flanagan for more as his dissection of the issue, especially in a Canadian context, is significant in political science circles.

Put a fence around your house and create your own flag. Its very easy. The down part would be that Canada wouldn't recognize you as a nation.

Thats not very Canadian.

I'm supposed to threaten to put a fence around me, and I'm supposed to threaten to create my own flag...

.....then I get federal funding, eh?

A nation is a historically constituted, stable community of people, formed on the basis of a common language, territory, economic life, and psychological make-up manifested in a common culture.

i.e. Britain, Austria, Denmark, China, Luxembourg.

Africa's not a nation. It's a continent. So is Asia.

Also, Devon isn't a nation.
