My bad... you are 100% correct...my G*d, if you have a hydro bill and a library card, you can vote!
Hmmm, our system is certainly NOT open to fraud.

You could just as easily produce a fraudulent piece of photo ID as a fraudulent library card.

Granted, someone could give you two pieces of their own original ID, but they're not going to be able to vote themselves.

Or someone could raid your trash, and you go to vote only to be told you have already voted.
Or man in burkha could vote as wife, mother, daughter....

if you keep your voting card in the trash, you probably aren't planning on voting

and,in that culture, they are probably voting the way he tells them to

Or someone could steal your DNA from a discarded popsicle stick and create an identical clone.

Is the system 100% secure? Of course not - it's designed to provide a suitable means of assurance against misuse, while still facilitating efficient voting. If everyone had to get fingerprinted and a cheek scrape to vote, a lot more people probably wouldn't go.

Also, adding just 30 seconds to every person's voting process translates to an extra 50 minutes required per hundred people. Someone else might know how many people arrive at any given voting station, but I'm guessing it's on average more than a few hundred, which means several extra hours of voting, and much longer lineups at busy stations.

If you're that worried about there being a significant number of cross-dressing Muslims affecting the ballot, write to Elections Canada and explain your issue - I personally won't lose any sleep over the notion.

Not everyone has a driver's licence, and in Ontario the provincial law ban anyone from demanding the Health Card as way of identification for purposes other than obtening health services. A former colleague of mine hasn't driven in over 40 years, and has not travelled out of North America since moving to Toronto from the US and becoming a Canadian citizen. If he's asked for photo id, he's screwed.

No system is entirely fraud-proof, but what we now have is better, way better, than what we had before. To make it better, the parliament should change the law to make showing your face when voting in person mandatory.

But let's not be fooled here. The recent changes have less to do with security than with placating those who scream priviledged because a few Muslim women were not subject to a requirement nobody else was subject to.

Sling @ Thu Sep 20, 2007 7:24 am

This has nothing to do with Muslims and everything to do with politicians playing politics.

No Muslim or Muslim group has asked to be allowed to vote without showing their faces.

This is about politicians getting their names in the news by fabricating a story. They made the law, and now they are screaming because some bureaucrat is implementing the law they made. They probably planned this out a year ago when they were wording the law and as they watched how the same issue unfolded in last year's provincial election in Quebec.
