I have heard a humour that Conservative candidates or party workers are not permitted to take part in a form of debate that might "hurt" the party in anyway. This would apply to anyone in any way associated with the campaign.

[QUOTE BY= Innes] I have heard a humour that Conservative candidates or party workers are not permitted to take part in a form of debate that might "hurt" the party in anyway. He could not even articulate a position on NAFTA or NATO without reading from a script. Even doing that it was crystal clear he had no idea what he was talking about. Truth be told, the NDP and Liberal both admitted on taped television that they didn't know much about NATO, NORAD, and NAFTA among other federal issues. That scares me to the bone.

Now consider that the Liberal, NDP and Conservative get all the air time, all the press and tv interviews while the other candidates including myself are passed over, we are going to get one terrible ill-informed MP at the worst time. The people need to know and hear for themselves the total lack of knowledge of the 'front runners'. Instead at all of these big three pander sessions, they will get softball questions on fluff matters and people will not know what they are getting.

And we wonder why so many people are so turned off of politics!

EDIT - to show I am not just playing partisan politics - for those in Greater Vancouver watch your community television station (usually ch 4) this sunday at 9am. See for yourself the complete and utter lack of knowledge and ability to field questions pertaining to national matters by the front runners. I am still shocked today thinking about it. In the taped event before us for another Surrey riding the Conservative candidate got up and left part way through the taping because the excellent host was giving very hard questions, and would drill you for an answer. Watch and see for yourself if you don't believe me.

Most MPs don't become that rich or powerful--many of them are doctors or lawyers and actually take pay cuts to run for election.

For many they do want to help their community and I applaud them for that, but increasingly it is which party you belong to that gets you elected whether you deserve it or not. When you cannot answer a question about Canadian involvement in Afghanistan via NATO because you don't know what NATO is, what does that say about what type of decisions they will make?

While some may take a pay cut to be an MP -it is the time after serving that will pay benefits. Many Conservatives and Liberals hop from corporate lives into the public life then back into the private corporate life but usually in an increased position. Think of it as the golden networking pyramid scheme.

There are some very good politicians among the big three parties and they do deserve to be there, but when it comes to my riding I don't believe for one second that they belong there. I say that because when I ran against Chuck Cadman I knew I could trust him to represent me in an informed, honest and decent way if he went on to win - which he did of course. I can't say that now. Surrey North like many places in Canada because of our democratic deficit is going to get a lousy ill-informed MP and for that my riding and other ridings are going to suffer.

Not bad at all.

I think it is also a problem that MPs are basically powerless anyway--just a human face. I have trouble even caring what they think as they have so little influence usually unless a minister.
