Arsenal win European Cup semi final, 1st leg.

The winner of the game will be a champion
yeah righto, so by that logic the UEFA Cup, Coca Cola Championship and even the Bognor Regis & District Sunday League could all be called the Champion's League.

Perhaps you don't understand the
qualifying process for the Champion's League? The UEFA Cup could be called a champion's league, but it is a second-tier competition behind the Champion's League.
With their win today, and Tottenham's loss, Arsenal qualified for next season's Champion's League. Though they will have to enter the competition in the second or third qualifying round before the group stages.
They still hope to win this year's Champion's League when they play Barcelona in Paris 17 May.
If Arsenal had lost today and then lost the Champion's League final, they would've qualified for the UEFA Cup, for finishing 5th in the English Premier League.
The best thing about soccer, other than the beautiful game, is all competitions. The EPL season ended today, but there were still next season's Champion's League spots and UEFA Cup spots to fight for and a spot in the Intertoto Cup. The three teams being relegated to the Coca Cola Championship were determined last week. And there's also the League Cup and the FA Cup competitions running during the season. And winning the League Cup or the FA Cup also means UEFA Cup spots
1st to 4th (Chelsea, Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal) in the EPL qualify for next season's Champion's League.
5th and 6th (Tottenham and Blackburn) in the EPL qualify for next season's UEFA Cup.
7th place Newcastle United qualify for next season's Intertoto Cup.
Also... the winner of the FA Cup qualifies for the UEFA Cup. The final is 13 May between Liverpool and West Ham United. Liverpool has already qualified for the Champion's League, so, win or lose, West Ham will play in next season's UEFA Cup.
Also... Middlesborough is in this season's UEFA Cup final against Seville 10 May in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Unlike the Champion's League, the winner of the UEFA Cup has an automatic spot in the next season's competition.

Five minutes. Five shitty minutes. Can't say enough about Arsenal, playing 10 men for over 70 minutes. The 2-1 loss is still tough though.

I can't believe it. I can't believe it. I really thought we could do it.

Well I'm happy. My firiend is a HUGE Arsenal fan and it was worth it to have him shut up for once.
But where did they find that ref? He made some horrible calls and non-calls. Corner kick were goal-kicks and vice versa while dives were legitimate fouls and blatant fouls weren't called.
MissT @ Wed May 17, 2006 2:18 pm
Apparently the original ref slated to do the game was photographed wearing a Barca shirt... so they got a different one in instead.
xerxes @ Wed May 17, 2006 2:23 pm
No that was one of the linesman, not the ref.
MissT @ Wed May 17, 2006 2:29 pm
Beg your parden, must have heard wrong while the others around me were nattering. Anyway, as you say, the ref was blind.
