The English Champions have signed Ukrainian Andriy Shevchenko from AC Milan for £30million. This comes just a few weeks after they also sign Michael Ballack - and manager Jose Mourinho has said that he now intends to sign Roberto Carlos.

JOSE MOURINHO last night signed Andriy Shevchenko for around £30million.

The AC Milan striker underwent a medical yesterday morning before penning a four-year deal.

Shevchenko, 29, and his advisers thrashed out personal terms at Stamford Bridge.

And he said: “I am here for the challenge and the excitement of playing in the Premier League.

“I’m going from one big club to another and joining a team of champions.

“There is a right moment to join a club and I think I’ve arrived here at the perfect time.

“The Champions League has to be a realistic target for next season but it is not just about the Champions League.

“Chelsea are going for their third Premiership title as well and I like the club’s mentality of wanting to win every game they play.

“I’ve followed Mr Mourinho’s career carefully and have been hugely impressed with the way he manages.

“He puts team ethic before individual expression which is the way I believe great teams are created.

“Had money been my motivation, I’d probably have stayed in Milan.

“I am pleased Chelsea managed to conclude everything before the World Cup — I can go to Germany with a clear mind and proud to be a Chelsea player.”

Blues chief executive Peter Kenyon added: “This is another proud day for Chelsea.

“The signing of Andriy, following on from Michael Ballack and Solomon Kalou, shows the ambition of Chelsea.

“The deal is a new club transfer record and is a straight cash deal. We are delighted to have signed one of Europe’s greatest goalscorers.”

Ukraine hitman Shevchenko posed outside the ground with a Chelsea shirt yesterday.

He will not be officially unveiled until after the finals but has already been told he will form a partnership with Didier Drogba.

The Ivory Coast hitman, a £24m signing from Marseille two years ago, claimed he wanted out of Chelsea.

But an official for French champions Lyon, Bernard Lacombe admitted last night: “Didier will not be coming here.”

Lacombe spoke with Drogba after the Ivory Coast drew 1-1 with Chile on Tuesday. Lacombe added: “Didier said Mourinho wanted to build the Chelsea team around him and Andriy Shevchenko.”

Mourinho also has big plans for striker Kalou, who has signed from Dutch club Feyenoord on a three-year deal.

The Portuguese coach believes Ivory Coast-born Kalou, 20, has “everything” and revealed he donned a disguise to scout the player recently.

Mourinho said: “We were watching him for a while. Two seasons ago, my No 2 Steve Clarke was in Holland and he was saying ‘not yet, not yet’.

“This season, I went for the last time in glasses, cap and scarf in Rotterdam and I saw him. I have no doubts the boy has everything.”

Carlos next on the list for Jose

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed his club's interest in experienced Real Madrid full-back Roberto Carlos.

The Brazilian international, who is training with his national team in preparation for the World Cup in Germany, recently claimed that the English champions have offered him a three-year deal.

Mourinho confirmed his club's interest in the South American.

"Roberto Carlos is 33 but for me he continues to be the best player in his position," said Mourinho.

"I am not one of those that looks at a player's birth certificate. I am one of those who thinks what matters is what he does during the 90 minutes on the pitch, not if he is 20, 30 or 40."

"We will have to be patient and wait to see what happens."

Roberto Carlos is under contract with Madrid for one further season but appears keen to leave the Bernabeu this summer.
