UEFA Cup, Semi Final, 2nd leg.
Middlesbrough 4-2 Steaua Bucharest
(Middlesbrough win 4-3 on aggregate)
It's been a fantastic week for English teams in Europe. On Tuesday, Arsenal reached the Final of the European Cup and will play Spanish team Barcelona.
And, last night, Middlesbrough reached the UEFA Cup Final and will also play a Spanish team - Sevilla.
Middlesbrough showed the typical English battling spirit and never-say-die attitude that ex-Chelsea manager Vialli talked about this week. And it is now TWICE that Middlesbrough have made an astonishing comeback in the UEFA Cup.
In last night's Semi-Final 2nd leg, Middlesbrough started the game 1-0 down on aggregate after Steaua Bucharest won the first leg 1-0. After 25 minutes, Steaua were 2-0 up in the game and 3-0 up on aggregate, and Middlesbrough needed FOUR goals without reply to win the game.
And they scored four goals, winning the game 4-2 and winning 4-3 on aggregate and the winning goal coming in the very last minute.
In the Quarter Final 2nd leg against the Swiss team Basel, Middlesbrough were 2-0 down on aggregate. Basel then scored, went 1-0 up in the game and 3-0 up on aggregate. Middlesbrough looked dead and buried. They had to score four goals - and they did, winning 4-1 in the game and 4-2 on the night.
So it's twice in a row that Middlesbrough have come back from the brink of defeat, and it's the first time in over 20-odd years that England have a team in both the European Cup Final and the UEFA Cup Final in the same season.
