Air Conditioning Problem

I own a Chevy Venture and I had multiple problems with it.

My latest is that my a/c compressor will not engage. In the vehicule, the light will turn on saying that is has sent the signal to engage the clutch on the compressor but it doesn't turn. I was wondering if any of you has ever encountered that problem and could give me a hint to where to look.

I've never worked on them before but maybe here's some troubleshooting tips to help you isolate the problem

- check the electrical wires at the compressor, perform a visual on the connectors, if in doubt clean them anyway

- measure for 12 volts at the compressor, if it isn't getting there you have a supply or grounding problem. if it is getting there you may have a faulty compressor

- for troubleshooting purposes only, try hot wiring the compressor to 12 volts, if it works you definitely have a supply/grounding problem. If it doesn't work, definitely have a faulty compressor unless you are overlooking some sort of relay or control line that enables or disables the compressor

- with compressor theory of a refridgerator - there is a compressor, and a 'starter'. Its possible that a faulty starter will stop the compressor from working. I don't know if this is the case with a vehicle, but its worth being aware that this might be the case.

hope this helps.

pls notice the approach that I'm taking, and you can fix alot of things that you know nothing about.

Thanks man... its a good start. I have extensive knowledge of how electrical and electronics works. So I have a very good idea on how to approach it. I checked that connector yesterday and they looked good.

Is there power to the compressor?

I don't know yet. I only checked to see if anything was disconnected.

What year is the car?

2001 Chevy Venture. I just replaced the Blower Motor Resistor Assembly. I sent $50 on a new one and it broke 30 mins later. They put fuses next to each resistor. The last fuse burned. I used some solder and made my own fuse. It is working again.

Too new for me. Thought it may have been a 70's Venture and I think have had some wiring diagrams.

The way they build the compressor is still the same, and the clutch is not engaging. So I am hoping it would be an easy fix.

If it's popping fuses maybe the compressor is seized and it's trying to draw too much voltage. I'd put 12 volts right to the compressor and see if it turns first. If it does go and there doesn't seem to be any grinding or excessive noise then it must be something in the circuit. Is there any service lights that come on? You may be able to get a diagnostic reader and get your answer from there.
