saga...Do not insult me with the "They pay taxes too" bullshit. Show me any one living on reserve that pays municipal taxes. How can they? They don't own the property! Why is that? Because the chiefs would loose control over the people if they actually had control over their housing.

We are sick of being held hostage every once in a while because someone doesn't get their way.

They do not represent the people, they represent the government.

The Band Councils were imposed by Canada when it outlawed their democracy, spiritual traditions and laws.

Some of them still imitate the Indian Agents who stole their money (and land).

The Band Councils only want the money for the land, and they may bend over too ea$ily.

It is the traditional governments ... specifically the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy who want the land back, and compensation for the settled areas.

Under Canadian law, they can assert Aboriginal title.

btw...On reserve income is federal and provincial tax free. On reserve fuel is tax free. Sales tax is either not paid or totally refunded on reserve. PST and GST is refundable if items are delivered on reserve.

Across Canada, only 3% of Indigenous people vote in the Band Council elections. They have basically boycotted them ever since Canada imposed them 80 years ago. They are CANADA's governments, not theirs. Theirs are traditional participatory democracies, not representative democracies like ours.

Yes, precisely, they pay all taxes except work and purchases ON the reserve. We are agreed.

They want whatever land (or compensation) was in their treaties and agreements. They want to be independent of Canada, also as in the treaties, so what they do on their land as far as taxes goes will be their business, and we can mind our own business. It is just business ... they need their land to support themselves ... in the ways we support ourselves today.
