I'm getting really confused on this AM3 & AM2+ socket type. For example look at this Tigerdirect combo.
The processor is listed as AM3 but the mobo is AM2+... How can that be?

I'm trying to spec out a mobo with 4xDDR2 slots that will accomodate a X3 710. I thought I had a good handle on this but now I'm getting really confused...
I was just about to order this from Newegg
Phenom X3 710
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6819103648
ASUS M4A78 Pro
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... 6813131362
But upon further investigation see the cpu listed as AM3 and the mobo as AM2+...?????
I'm really confused now...
Buy American Stemmer, buy American.
AMD is a great American company....!!!!!
I just went through this with my PC tech a couple of weeks ago when he upgraded one of my PCs. He just replaced a an AMD 4600 with an AMD 3.1Gig 6000+

Socket AM2+ (940-contact PGA) - AMD socket for single processor systems. Features support for DDR2 and HyperTransport 3 with separated power lanes. (Replaces Socket AM2 , electrically compatible with Socket AM2). Supports Athlon 64, Athlon 64 X2, Athlon 64 FX, Opteron, and Phenom processors.
Socket AM3 (938-contact PGA) - AMD socket for single processor systems. Features support for DDR3 and HyperTransport 3 with separated power lanes. Replaces Socket AM2+ with support for DDR3-SDRAM.

Just liquidated all the work stations at a failed sawmill, opened the boxes and one unit was a dual Xeon 3.0Ghz server... muah hah hah... $30 including the 21" CRT
That one's a keeper, but some of the money's going to upgrade my X2 6000
@stemmer:
AM3 CPUs will work in AM2*, AM2+* and AM3 mainboards, because their IMC can handle DDR3 and DDR2 memory.
AM2 and AM2+ CPUs wont work in AM3 mainboards because their IMC can't handle DDR3.
And don't buy Asus mainboards, their bioses are... ...phucked up.

*depends on the Bios, sometimes µCode update is required, but in general the CPU will work but will be recognized as <unknown cpu>
Thanks kindly for the replies...
np although I kinda necroposted
been away fo a looooong time
Hey what's wrong with ASUS? My board is going great so far.
Ever tried serious overclocking? Sometimes you experience severe difficulties with biosbugs (wrong Ram timings, wrong HT and so on) which so far only occured on Asus boards. They sometimes update a bios and fix some issues and "add" new ones, but that's just my experience...
I prefer stability over oc capability... I'm not much of a gamer but I do alot of photo editing, 2D graphics (Painter) and 3D modeling & rendering....
Yeah okay, if you're not into overclocking than ASUS is fine, just like almost any other manufacturer...
I use mainly Foxconn and Gigabyte boards for our in-store builds. Did a Phenom quad with 8GB and XP Pro64 for a guy to do photo work with last week. Bulk of our sales are AMD 7750/7850 duals and some 1640s for offices.
