Best Android Phone in Canada?

I have had the HTC Touch Windows Mobile phone for 3+ years now, so its time for a new phone! I've actualy been running Google Android on it for over a year, I've hacked my phone to do so.

So I'm trying to decide which is the best Android powered phone available in Canada. It seems the best 2 android phones which are brand new are now coming to Canada (Droid X and Evo 4G).

So after much research I think i've narrowed it down to two phones, the HTC Desire and the Samsung Galaxy S.

HTC Desire: (lots of videos on right)
http://www.htc.com/www/product/desire/overview.html

Samsung Galaxy S:
http://galaxys.samsungmobile.com/

I was at first leaning towards the Desire as it just came to Telus on August 2nd, but then after reading about the Galaxy S more I can't decide!

The Galaxy S seems to have a nicer and brighter screen also a bit bigger screen. Galaxy S is a bit lighter and thiner, but said to feel cheaper. They both have 1Ghz cpu's but the Galaxy S scores almost 1000 points higher on benchmark tests and much higher on 3D gaming FPS tests. But people in forums say the samsung can be a bit buggy and there 3rd party UI over android kinda sucks. Where as the HTC Sense UI is actualy good.

Galaxy S is also more expensive $149 compared to $79 on 3 year contract. And only Bell has one currently, so I would have to switch from Telus.

Does anyone have or have used either of these phones? Or do you think another phone is the best android phone?

If I was to buy a phone right now I would go with the Samsung. The only drawback I can find is it has no flash for it's camera.

So I went down to Bestbuy to see if they had any Desires in stock, which they did. And to my surprise they had a working demo of the Samsung Galaxy S. So I was able to play around with the phone for a good 10 minutes. I have to say I was impressed, it was much nicer than I thought it would be. The Samsung UI over android was a bit weird, since I’m used to using a stock android rom. It was a bit iphone-ish. The screen was super nice and the camera and video camera looked really nice. They didn’t have an working Desires and they wouldn’t open a box. It’s hard to compare a working unit to one of the dummy show models for the Desire. But I think I liked the look and feel of the Samsung more. I thought I would like the hardware buttons on the Desire more than the touch buttons on the Samsung, but I think I like the opposite.

I’m even more confused over which phone I like, I really need to find a working Desire to play with to really compare. The Galaxy S seemed so fast though, after using Android hacked on my 3+ year old Touch phone it’s like going from a 486 to a quad core.

Sony x10 all the way, far superior to all. minus the 1.6 which is fixed in sept. Other then that it literally runs circle around the others

x10 is a great phone. a buddy has one and gone over it many times but how does it "run circles around the others"? I don't think it does buds.. the galaxy is a tight phone..thou lacking a flash still takes good pics even in low light. I aint denying the x10 isnt sicke..but to say it runs laps might be pushin it a bit.. as far as the galaxy vs. the desire is a no brainer.. the galaxy is a much superior phone not only in it's body size screen resolution and quality but the processor alone is enough reason to go with it.

I forgot to update this thread, I ended up getting the HTC desire on Aug 12th. I went to 5 telus stores and none had any demo units to play with, they said there was none. But I found one at the downtown Futureshop, and i was impressed enough that I bought the phone then and there. Good thing too i think its backordered everywhere now.

I'm loving the phone, only problem with a new device is there are no accessories anywhere for it. So i've ordered a case, screen prortector and other goodies from eBay.

The only thing im not 100% impressed with is the battery life, but that is typical of these smartphones and im using it heavily right now since its new too me.

One annoying thing about Android is you can only install apps to the internal memory, which fills up REALLY fast, I can only have like 20 apps installed, and i keep having to remove some to free up space. This will be fixed when Telus realeaseas the Android 2.2 update which allows you to install apps to the SD card. Can't wait for that!!!!!!!!!!! and the voice search.

Aadamgibson Aadamgibson:
I would go with the Samsung galaxy s3 or HTC One X (AT&T).

We have AT&T in Canada? Huh, that's new to me

I think Samsung Galaxy S2 is the best choice.

That thread is three years old. Time to put Canada on the map and look the new X10. If you prefer a full screen, the Z10 is awesome :D
