I have a problem with one of my computers , I can't seem to pinpoint .

We have had two hard drives running in it for about a year with no problems (one 80 Gig and one 120 Gig) except for about a half dozen times it would boot up like something was being ground up inside and very loud too .

A few days ago the computer decided to shut down out of the blue , so I fired it back up and it kept shutting down after a few minutes . Now it will not boot up at all , but when we plug it in the computer turns on but will not shut off unless unplugged from the electrical outlet .

We plugged the harddrive into another computer and it seems to be running just fine , and even ran a scan for viruses .It was clean/clear of any viruses . I tested the Monitor , Keyboard , mouse and CMOS battery they are fine nothing seems to be out of the ordinary on the inside of the computer and the fans work fine .Any help or idea as to what the problem could be would be appreciated . Thanks

Wich one of the drive did you try in another puter?

And when you powerd your Emachines c2825 does the power supply fan work?

I had the 80 gig hhd plugged into the old computer under slave, worked fine. Yes the power supply fan works along with the cooling fan at the same time,in the emachine.

What about the other one?

I have seen a drive that had an internal short. And even if it was not in used (slave) it cause the puter to sut down.

could it be your cpu fan???? and your CPU would have overheated????

This might sound stupid but did you test your electrical outlet? A wise electrician once told me before ya take the appliances apart check your outlets with a tester thingy thing.

Sorry I wrote the original message but my wife has been writing the rest .I thought the same thing about the internal short although it works on one computer but not the e-machine . Here is Mrs. Banff again ....

I plugged the extra hhd on the emachine it works fine in slave. . I hace also plugged the o/s emchine hhd on the old computer it works too fine in slavw drive. As for running the o/s emachine on the old computer alone won't work because of MBR(master boot record).

The outlit works fine so does the serge protector. Good point though. Thanks

It's your power supply. I had this happen to me a year ago. DO NOT BOOT WITH THE FAULTY SUPPLY. Every time you try your risking fragging your OS and possibly your hardware/motherboard as well.

If it wouldn't have been of the bad noise, I would have recommanded that you check your C-MOS battery.

THe power supply was my next guess!

The cmos battery is up to par. Tested to 3.03volts.
