There is a new problem with WPA2 that is being called the krack attack. These companies already made a fix for this flaw. Apparently, there is another fix is according to this post which suggests that using a VPN can also help in securing your pc against this. Does that makes sense?

Most companies have already posted patches for this. Updating your O/S and firmware will mitigate it.

i already installed the patch. I wanted to know whether VPNs can really help in this kind of situation

A VPN will stop your data from being sniffed, but won't change whether your equipment is vulnerable to the Krack to begin with. Fix the problem, AND use a VPN. :)
