Sony says is 35 times faster than the chip inside the current PlayStation

If you mean dominate then yes it will

I don't believe it has nothing to do with just raw power, ps3 is lacking in memory, so i'm not sure, but in the end it comes down to the games.

X360 and PS3 stat Comparison

With text

PS3 has 256MB GDD3 dedicated to Graphics, the Xbox only has 10MB.

The WiFi is built into the PS3 you have to buy it on Xbox.

We all know that its going to be ps3 and x360 battleling each other but I think Ps3 will have way more sales and dominate x360.

from the looks of things, the PS3 is superior in many ways and is backwards compatable with the PS2...i think it will be bad news for the Xbox 360. Unless microsoft has a trick up its sleeve the PS3 should dominate. But always remember that little 'should'

$1:

this is a completely usless statistic and inaccurate. The Xbox uses memory in a different way

Scape @ Wed May 18, 2005 4:53 pm

From a memory standpoint, both systems are roughly equal with about 512MB of memory dedicated to system and graphics. The Xbox 360 has Unified Memory Architecture that lets the CPU and GPU share the system's 512MB of memory. The PlayStation 3 on the other had has 256MB of xdr memory and 256MB of GDDR3 memory dedicated to graphics.

Speed and access will be the determining factor. Wifi and backward compatibility will give the PS3 the edge.

the PS3 is way a head of current computers, with the new PowerPC Cel Processor the PS3 has 2.18 TeraFlops of power.

Avro Avro:
It always comes down to games, whoever has the real winners will win the war but I think loyalty plays a big part as well. If you had owned a PS1 and then a PS2 then it is likely you will get a PS3. I have been a Nintendo guy throughout the console wars except for the Collecovision I had (boy did I ever date myself there). This time I will proabally get the X-box 360 but it will depend on the first few titles and price. Market anaylists expect the X-box to outsell the PS3 this time around and that is quite a claim considering PS2's market share currently is 43% while X-box is only 19% and Nintendo bringing up the rear at 14%.

You didn't date yourself Avro in a bad way, I had a Coleco as well. Zaxxon, Subroc, the Smurfs, Cosmic Avenger, I loved 'em all!

Where did you get the numbers for market share? Most sales reports I've read on the subject have PS2 selling 10 to 1 on BOTH competitor's system! That is, 10 PS2s for every GameCube OR Xbox.

Scape, I just don't think hardware specs factor in to the equation that much. Sega battled hard against the Super Nintendo with games, despite having a faster processor. Sonic, a bloody Mortal Kombat 1 and the sports games propelled them to success. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I think Sony will have a massive advantage with Japanese game support that the Microsoft STILL lacks (although they seem to have Namco helping them out quite a bit).

Actually the ps3 only does 1.8 teraflops of speed for it's gpu. The processor does 218 gigaflops, and is only 3.2gigahertz. Both combined give the performance of 2 teraflops.

But because the cell is only one processor, it doesn't have as many hardware threads, where as the xbox has 6 threads. The xbox also has a larger l2 cash of 1MB compared to 512 kB of the ps3.

Their actually pretty close, in hardware. The ironic part is that both processors are from ibm.

Scape @ Thu May 19, 2005 5:43 pm

IBM is laughing all the way to the bank.

Dayseed @ Thu May 19, 2005 5:55 pm

Snow: 1.8 terraflops? 1.8 terraflops?!? Great Scott! (runs out of room)

Dayseed: (Following) What the hell is a terraflop?

(A bastardized homage to Robert Zemeckis' wonderful movie)

Snow @ Thu May 19, 2005 6:08 pm

A teraflops is the speed that a processor and what not can do floating point math, which is essential for graphics.
