It's up, try refreshing.

Pitty, because I definately wanted to read that.

One of the best things I found was an unrelated motorcycle forum that had someone's brother who was in the US service who was asking for donations of used soccer balls for Afghan kids. It was an absolutely brilliant move and the whole thing snowballed into a huge effort involving sporting goods companies, etc. No hype or PR but kids get sports gear and will probably beat Canada and the US in the upcomming world finals.
Soccer is really the worlds game and poor countries can compete against the most weathy with no disadvantages. Considering the fighting spirit of the Aghans, I'm sure we'll see them soon.

$1:
"There are good ones and bad ones, just like in Afghanistan. And Canadians are the good ones."

Ze man must be a collaborator vit ze occupying forces from ze fahzerlaund.

Read it and was kind of disapointed... :-(
This is one of the reasons I'd like to see a trade pact with Afghanistan. If their farmers can grow anything other than poppies, we should buy it regusrdless of cost,. Hell, it can't be any worst than the wheat marketing board.
I'd buy a rug, hat, jacket, just to know that I supported someplace that needed help.

I would like to see something done privately in the same manner as Ethical trading but focused on Afghanistan. The government could provide the seed money to get the wheels in motion but I see this as a private venture.

That's exactly what Afghanistan needs, a breather for skilled artisans to start producing and marketing products other than heroin. That is exactly why NATO is there, trying to create pockets of stability that demonstrate to other Afghanis that there is a possibility for a better life. NATO is not there as occupiers to rape and pillage, as some would have us believe, but as a police force. Sometimes you have to make peace if there isn't any there to enforce.

Excellent posts. These "pockets of stability" become the role models and are expanded over the whole region. I'd gladly spend money on a carpet that I don't need if it kept a few familes employed and out of the drug trade.

guess them being so far away from canada , they likely don't know much about it .
to them canada is only a country far away that they will likely never see in person. just as most canadians will never see afghanistan is person and don't know much about it.

Remember, apparently less than 60% of US know enough about our own country to gain citizenship........ I think they did pretty good by those standards.

Wullu:

I'd make the distinction that MOST people born in Canada will be MORE informed about Canada than the guy who came here in 2003 and became a citizen last year. He will be counted in to the totals and cause the outcome to be skewed.
