Even though completely legal, as the accountants say, it was a big political mistake. Morneau isn't doing this job for the money but he should have avoided all suspicion by doing more than necessary and using a blind trust. It's another example of what can happen when you appoint political newbies to high office.
No arguments from me there. I've often written that 'legal' doesn't always mean it was the right or moral thing to do. But like Paul Martin, he has the business chops to be Finance Minister, even if he is new to politics.
The other aspect of inexperience is he's reacting like a normal person to the pressure instead of brazening it out with big smiles. It's getting to him.
Polievre gave quite the performance today.
That's how one gets political experience. A few black eyes and bloody noses first.
It's all our fault. If Morneau hadn't been caught, there would be no reason for him to consider the ethics of business as usual. Shame on us. The Liberals know what is best for us
Just ask one.

If someone else is managing it ala blind trust,, then they can’t make market trades with insider knowledge. That’s the realistic risk here: not so much that he’ll write laws that benefit his assets but that he’ll buy and sell assets based on privileged information not available to the public.
He doesn’t have to be cabinet member you know, he can easily go back to being “just” a multimillionaire banker, I’m sure he’ll figure out how to survive.
Blind trust or bust!
Putting his assets in a blind trust doesn't stop him legislating things that advantage his known assets, whether he controls them or not. He knows they still exist and can enrich himself using his position.
Divestiture is the only was to ensure that can't happen, but having a legislative proxy is a close second.
Yeah but finance ministers don’t rule the country by decree. Cabinet as a whole makes the significant decisions with PM as its executive. It’s not likely that rhe laws of the nation will be formed to benefit the interests of one particular cabinet minister. Plus legislation is there for all to see so laws that make no sense but benefit his particular interests are less likely than the REAL potential, which is that he’ll make business/investment decisions based on privileged knowledge.
Divest AND blind trust I think are best.
Well this is a bizarre convo. I thought Caleb would want to hang Morneau, and Beav would be defending his statements.
What did Morneau do before public service?

What did Morneau do before public service?
President of family owned finance and HR services firm Morneau Shepell
Why would you expect me to defend Morneau!?

And why would I hang a guy for being an honest, successful businessman who has decided to turn to public service?
